You might not always agree with Oprah but today you will benefit by
watching unless you are one of the rare quilters who is organized. Her
program is shown in the Chicago area at 9 a.m. but I know in other
areas it is later in the afternoon. This maybe a repeat that I missed
before but the coupon offer is still good.

This program is beyond just getting the junk out and buying
organizers. They talk about developing a routine to prevent the
clutter from gathering again. This is what I needed to hear. When I
reorganized my studio last year I cleared one big clutter pile in a
corner in front of the corner shelving unit which often prevented me
from checking those shelves for needed fabric. Instead of digging
through the pile to reach the shelves I would go buy more fabric. Just
yesterday I noticed that the pile is re-building. That has to go. They
also discuss decluttering the car. Fortunately we have that under
control but it was a good reminder of how it can get.

Beyond the information Oprah is offering a 25% coupon for The
Container Store, either in-store or on-line. Yes, this store is often
expensive but they do have great things. Go to www.Oprah.com for the
coupon.

Much of the program was the basic stuff like every time you purchase
something new you must rid yourself of something (toss, recycle or
donate). The important reminder for me was to establish a routine
everyday or once a week to constantly declutter. I am trying to clear
my studio table every Friday morning. A clean table creates order in
the entire room.

The car situation was classic. A family with a minivan and several
children in multiple sports were constantly rushing from school to
practice, etc. Their car was full of trash. The parents were in the
audience but the grandmother had cooperated and had the van trucked to
the studio. How embarrassing to have the contents of your car
displayed on national TV. It was obvious that the mother would go
shopping while the children were at practice. Bags of items purchased
would be buried under uniforms and fast food containers. There were
also lost library books, missing shoe, etc. Oprah then asked what the
house was like. The wife said the house was OK but the garage was bad
because when the children no longer fit in the car stuff was just
pushed into the garage. Of course Oprah knew the answer to her
question because she had a photograph of the garage stuffed with so
much junk there wasn't a walking path.

The show also visited two dorm rooms and showed the students how to
declutter and create zones. This was the segment which made me think
the show was a repeat. I just kept thinking how much money the parents
were paying to have three students housed in this tiny dorm space.

Can't think of the recommended book on decluttering but if you go to
www.Oprah.com I am sure she will promote the book.

Here's a wonderful quote from Maxine in case you get too carried away with
the declutter production:

"Always keep several get well cards on the mantle.....
so if unexpected guests arrive, they will think you've been sick and unable
to clean."

I love it! Polly

I love it too!

A friend came over (I'm still laid up with sciatica) and cleaned my
bathroom yesterday! I kind of hate it but I really appreciate it.

Another suggestion is to whip the Hoover out and station it in the
middle of the floor before you answer the door. "I was just in the
middle of the weekly clean".
