Yeah, but I like pictures to have a guide to follow if people have them! I
mean, many people here have digital cameras so it only takes a few secs if
they're making it to check the recipe or something.

I dont plan to make either of the recipes Im going to submit any time soon.
I wait for sales on chicken wings for one and dont feel like eatting cold
rice salad till it gets hotter out. If someone needs pictures to help them
figure out a step then its ok with me if they ask for them later. :-)

Im wondering about those of us who read using Web TV. Are they going to be
able to download the book at all?

Well, it would be a shame to do it that way because then photo's and

things
can't be included. But, maybe there could be two versions. I

personally
think a pdf with hotlinks would be good, but it's up to everyone else.

Okay, lissen up who'all suggested this. I'm happy to help organise

it.
Perhaps if I do the Oz/NZ/Metric ones and someone else take over the
non-metric. And to make it easier, perhaps we include a page of

metric
to non-metric conversions rather than changing each recipe. Then we

get
together once we have received all the recipes (cyberlly speaking)

join
the two docs together (we're doing it in MS Word right?) and email

to
whoever wants it.

Please NO. Plain ASCII text for a constant-width font, hard-formatted
with spaces as necessary. Word documents can be an unintelligible

pain
in the bum if you don't use the same version of the program as the

person
who wrote it (or don't use Word at all). They are never less than ten
times the size of a text file saying exactly the same thing, and can
harbour macro viruses.

People shouldn't be expected to shell out hundreds of dollars for
proprietary software like MS Word or MS Office to read a free recipe
book.

The recipe program outputs somebody posted here are just fine - far
more compact and flexible than a Word file.

I used plain HTML, done in such a way that I would *never* need to
update it, for the recipes on our webpage. They get a few hundred
hits a day so somebody must like them. But HTML is too tricky to
maintain in a group project; CSS (which will be the right approach
for this someday) is even harder to keep straight as technology
changes.

That;s a good idea - maybe a website to go with it with all the pics and
texts on it? I've got loads of hosting space and could do it if someone
wanted.

I haven't read the entire thread yet, so maybe this has been mentioned
already. One thing my MIL does at holidays is print out recipe cards on her
PC - she selects a few recipes she has enjoyed over the year, makes a cute
little card, either with stickers or clipart, and gives them out to us. I
have a little photo album I keep them in, along with a few from my family.

It might be fun to start a group which swaps these cards.

All this talk about Ben & Jerry's ice cream and Julia's post about her
cheesecake recipe got me to thinking. This may have been brought up at

some
time or other, I don't know. But I'll bring it up again. Has anyone ever
collected recipes from RCTQ and put them together into a recipe book and
then distributed to the participants? I think it would be so much fun to
collect recipes from quilters around the world and put them together with
little anecdotes from each person. Would anyone be interested in
participating?

with....and some of the recipies may be works of art

I'm in favor of a PDF. You don't need to worry about formatting across
programs and operating systems. The Adobe Reader is available for just
about any operating system you can think of, and it's free for the
downloading (I recommend downloading it directly from adobe.com, you get
the latest version and the odds of a virus are pretty remote).

I'm also in favor of PDF. My reasoning is that I sometimes come across
recipes or quilt instructions that have been done with a font I don't
have, and the "fancy" fractions used look like strange symbols, giving
me no clue as to whether I'm supposed to be looking at 1/2, 1/4, or
whatever. :S

There wouldn't be any pictures with mine, I'm afraid.
I really don't think we should be going to these relatively
extraordinary lengths. We have had many, many recipes on the newsgroup
here, just within the message - they have been received very well and
appreciated. Just a simple text of the recipe, in some way most can
receive it easily is surely required.

Fine, you take it over! I'm no computer wizz, and word is simplest to me.
I've never had a problem receiving or reading the directory in word format.
If you can do it better, then by all means you are welcome to it.

Actually Jennifer, you've prolly hit the nail on the head. Read the thread,
a lot of people want to contribute but no-one wants to actually "do" it. I
offered to do it in word format - easy for me to copy and paste and format
and send out, easy to read, pictures can be included. However since I
stepped up a lot of people have decided that PDF, ASCII text whatever is
much better, so I'm hereby resigning my post. I'm not computer literate
enough to even know what those things are let alone how to use 'em!
