Estelle sent this link . . . now that I look at the pattern, I see that it
could be made from nickel (5")squares.

Does anyone else see quilt blocks and try to figure out how to make them out
of nickel squares?!!

Estelle:
In US Coins, a Nickel is worth five cents. Pat Speth wrote a few
books based on making quilts using mainly 5" squares. She calls
these Nickel Quilts. So many of us call 5" squares Nickel
Squares. Personally I prefer to trade 6" squares!

I have a pack of 4" Christmas squares I inherited and I keep seeing
packs for 4" squares on Ebay, but it seems a strange size to choose.
What would you use a 4" square for? - 4.1/2" yes, but 4"? Just a bit
of a nothing size to me. Or am I missing something?

She came to our guild as a guest speaker. By the time the evening was over
I think I was seasick from the scrappy quilts that were shown, one after the
other, after the other, ad nauseum. I wanted to stand up and shout, "I get
it! You can make a lot of different designs from swapping 5 inch squares
and cutting them up!!!" I think quilters have been doing that for a century
or more!
Sorry if I offended anyone who's having a ball trading squares. The gals in
our guild who were trying to arrange a 5 inch swap before that particular
meeting were ready to tear their hair out before it was over. I guess we
have a lot in our guild who can't follow directions. I have to admit I
wasn't one of them.....I didn't want or need anymore scraps at my house.

I have a bundle. I use them for applique when I just need a bit of
something for say a flower center or an accent leaf or two.

I guess they would work well for Billy Lauder's method of making nine
patches with squares. Wouldn't matter the size as long as they were all
the same.

Or, Anita's methods for square in a square, old italian and plain blocks
she showed on Simply Quilts last Monday. I know you can access those
directions on the HGTV website.

Estelle, "nickel squares" are 5". The design concept was popularized by Pat
Speth, www.patspeth.com
She's written two books: Nickel Quilts and More Nickel Quilts, both
published by That Patchwork Place. There are many nickel square swaps.

My "Twenty-Cent Geese" (in the Nov. issue of The Quilter) is called that
because each flying geese block is made from four nickel squares, or twenty
cents' worth.
I've used nickels in several projects.
