Howcome my 1 mm (or so) 14K diamond cut square curb chain, that I used to
wear often (and the rest of the time was keeping some pendants' company in a
box) and is over a decade old, still looks nice and shiny? Is it solely
cause it's a small piece, so scratches are too small to be clearly visible
and dull the shine? Just curious. Thnx!

Perhaps that, plus a light weight chain, because it's light, doesn't hit or abrade
things with much force, again producing only small scratches, plus the diamond cut
surfaces are quite flat, or often even very slightly concave, so the tendancy is for
edges to show wear more quickly than the flat faces. And with a chain, most of the
exposed flat faces will tend to be at least slightly shielded at any one time, by
adjacent links. Also, consider that skin and clothes themselves are not especially
abrasive. If the chain is kept clean, and not in frequent contact with other more
abrasive surfaces or other jewelry (like pendants hung on the chain), most of the wear
may be on the insides of the links, where gold wire is wearing down in contact with the
gold wire in the next link.
