My favourite part is the actually quilting. It's so relaxing. The rest ties for
second!

1. What technique do you like the best (appliqu?, piecing, paper

I've only tried two piecing methods: machine and EPP, I prefer EPP
because I can get the corners, etc to all match up, but my machine
piecing is improving.

2. What part of the quilting process do you enjoy the
most?(design, fabric selection, piecing, quilting, etc.)Why?

ATM design and piecing, I might revise after attepting machine
quilting. I just can't figure out how to do the rocking bit
for hand quilting, maybe I need a demo just can't get it from
pictures.

Hand applique, I fell in love with it and it is just so much fun, especially
with straw needles....which I had never tried before but fell in love with a
couple of years ago. It is so relaxing.

I love designing...and hand piecing and applique, I also love dying fabric

because it gives me a special freedom to make any kind of fabric I want...of
course when it doesn't turn out I have only myself to blame ; )

My favorite part is picking the colors!!! We all know I have my favorite
color, but I really like picking all the colors that will go together. The
quilting is my least favorite part.......until I get into it, then it isn't
so bad. The hardest part of me is deciding "how" (as in what pattern) to
quilt it. I have always been strictly a machine person.....but recently
took a handquilting class and discovered I kind of like it. I have a
friend who is trying to get me to l ike applique, but that is still aways
off, I think.

I loved the responses in this thread. Everyone is so different!
(Tiina, see query below.)

I ultimately love hand quilting the best, but tend to piece more
than anything. I think if I could just sit down and hand quilt
something, without all the preparation,I'd spend most of my time
on that. But I DO love my piecing. I piece lots of tops, and
don't even care if they ever get to be all finished. They are
beautiful in their own right. MY favourite patterns are Log
Cabins and Stars.

I do some appliqué, but I have found I am not nearly as creative
at it as some people (probably lack of practice) so I tend to do
simple patterns or blanket stitch ones. I'm pretty good at the
blanket stitch stuff.

I also love old quilt blocks, or finding an older quilt top made
by another quilter and not yet quilted. These are real joys for
me.

Tiina, can you tell me more about these straw needles? My
sister has mentioned them too.

Cheers,

Lynne in Toronto

I've paid a local quilter to bind two of my quilts. No, three. Two were
"full bed" size; one crib size. I feel she charges too little ($10/hour),
but have not told her that! I think the most I paid was $20.

I love to bind! I love to make the binding, I love to stitch the
binding and I am anal over mitered corners. Crisp, they have to be
crisp. Now, if there were enough folks that didn't like to bind and
were willing to pay for the service, I wouldn't mind setting up a
binding business.

I'll bet there are enough! LOL

There's a lady here in Woodland who does nothing but binding, and I always
have her cards available for my customers because *I* sure as heck won't

do
it anymore (for pay). Methinks every LQS in the area probably has or wants
her cards, too.

If you ever think about setting up a binding business, check with your

local
LQS's and longarmers. Show them samples of your work, and you'll probably
have as much business as you want.

Depends on what mood I'm end. Right now hand appliqué is at the top
because I can work on it while DBF watches baseball and not get any
complaints about how I'm obsessed with quilting. (Hmm, everyone start
rooting for the Cubs. If they go to the series, I can get my top pieced
and begin hand quilting it while DBF is otherwise engaged.)

2. What part of the quilting process do you enjoy the

It's hard to say. I love buying fabric, I love putting it together, I
really like watching the quilt progress. But I don't like doing the
binding.

And yes, I know the answer for some of you will be "all of the
above"...but try to be a little more specific, please. (VBG)

Lynne in Toronto

DBF should support your quilting, not complain about your being obsessed...

Howdy ...
Actually, I do like most aspects of quilting, but I am selecting
only one response to each question.

Favorite Technique: piecing.
Why? I get a kick out of the amazing results one can achieve with
simple shapes.

Most enjoyable quilt making process: machine piecing.
Why? It is satisfying process. It is a kick to really see how the
colors, textures, and values play together. It is fun to
'discover' secondary or even tertiary design.

Not asked, but I am telling you anyhow .... least enjoyable quilt
making step: selecting a quilting design.
Why? I am usually stymied about what would be most suitable and
complementary to the pieced top. I sometimes have ideas for
elaborate designs but do not know how to execute them. That is,
there would be too many stops and starts and that would make me
nuts.

Well,
I enjoy different aspects of quilting at different times. I love the look
of appliqué and am working on making my hand appliqué better. I love
designing a quilt top, and finding/choosing fabrics for it. Since I am
very "territorial" I want the whole quilt to be "mine" so I am also
working on my machine quilting, and also plan to do a very few with hand
quilting.
One of the things I really like is taking traditional patterns and giving
them some "kick", like my Goose in the Pond top, that has acquired the
name of "Amish on Acid" since it is bright (some neon) prints with black.
Or adding a few small squares of a "third" color to a "two" color quilt.
I also like to design and make quilts that involve word play, as in the VW
"bug" quilt I made for DH. (There is a "water" bug, a "computer" bug and
so on.)
Generally I love to work with fabric and see something happen with it.
VBG It is just so wonderful to see what different fabrics do, even with
the same pattern.
Playing with block patterns is also fun, seeing what happens when you turn
them all sorts of ways and combine them. (That is what I want EQ5 for,
one of these days I will be able to afford it.)

Hope this helps to answer your question, Lynne, even though I am one of
the ones that will answer......... "all of it"

Actually, they are not really "mistakes" they are "design options". BG

Hey, if they were any kind of LQS they would admire your verve!
Id like to see your mistakes too. We all make them.. its what you do after
the mistake is made that counts.
It would hamper my creativity to think about 30 dollar meter mistakes
too!!!! Ack! ... and thats why until this year I really didnt buy any at the
LQS. I learned on Walmart stuff.
The invitation stands.. come play with me. I have the luxury of inexpensive
fabric .. we can learn together!

Sounds like great fun Diana! I think I could really do with a shopping
mentor at times. I will leave my stash at home though so that I will have
room for more to bring back :-)

Price certainly plays a part in my decisiveness. When I see I need a

meter
of something and the fabric I would love to get is upwards of $30/m...just
not the sort of thing to make a mistake with.

As for making mistakes...you should see some of them snorfle

Shona wondering what the not-so-LQS would think of her diving head first
into their fabric in NZ

I think you need to come visit me. Bring your stash. We will make it

grow.
Then we can play. I will teach you how not to get discouraged and how to
have fun with colors.
I wonder sometimes if the cost of materials where you are leads to
indecisiveness in the pursuit of the *perfect* combination of colors.

First
rule.. there is no such thing as perfect and close is usually close

enough.
There are usually a whole bunch of fabrics that will work really well

with
the first fabric you chose. Be bold.. dive head first into it, be

unafraid
to make mistakes!
Thats my helpful hint of the day

Well, the only thing I know how to do is easy applique and piecing so

they
must be my favourite techniques for now.

As far as which part of the process is my favourite....hmmm...I don't

like
choosing colours (have trouble matching stuff) but I like buying

fabric;
I
don't like choosing a pattern (probably cuz then I would have to

choose
colours!) but I love cutting the fabric up. Sewing together is fun

until
my
seams don't match and I get discouraged. Quilting is fun cuz I don't

care
how close/far apart my stitches are. Binding is fun because I get to

use
my
walking foot for part and get to hand sew for part....

I guess choosing my favourite part in the process is kinda like

choosing
fabric - I can't decide so I buy it all :-)
