Fabric connoisseur
I am by no means a knowledgeable person when it comes to fabric. However, a
couple of weeks ago I went to a church rummage sale and found these fabrics. They felt old, not to mention that they also looked it. So I bought them for a song. I had to wash them a couple of times. It was as if they had sat in someone's attic for a long time. I'm thinking that perhaps they are feedsacks. All the photographed fabric (expect of the yellow one) same length (a bit more than a yard), have funny holes along the selvage and sides. The weave is coarse, well not tight like today's fabric. The yellow one is apprx 2 yards and has numbers stamped on it. The weave is a bit tighter. I don't think that would be a feedsack (not that I know anything about it). Please check in the fabric folder: http://photos.yahoo.com/ceridwen_rhea I would appreciate any bit of info you might have on these. Thanks for your input. -- Carole Champlain, NY http://photos.yahoo.com/ceridwen_rhea |

I think you are right! And you found a gold mine.........depending on what
you paid of course. Feedsacks sell for $8 to $12 each---sometimes more. Don't let Frood talk you out of them. They would make a pretty Depression Era quilt---maybe Dresden Plate? Oh Carole, you really hit the jackpot there! The
yardage with the holes probably comes from feed sacks. Is the yellow one that faded one at the end, or the bright plaid one? In any case, remember that flour sacks would not be as coarse as feed sacks. Not that I am an expert either. If you decide to sell any, please let me know! Thanks for the input. Would you believe that I paid less than that for all
the of them. They were in a box underneath a table. I have two reds (one has some holes in it). I haven't decided what I'm going to do with them. The fabric feels so much different than what I'm used to. I will admit, I love finding treasures D Don't let Frood talk you out of them. Your description is spot on - holes along the selvage and sides, in addition to the coarse weave. I also recognize several of the patterns as ones in my collection. lisae |

"Pat in Virginia" wrote in message news0uge.11690$aB.7809@lakeread03... Is the yellow one that faded one at the end, or the bright plaid one? The plaid one is the same yardages as the others. It has a tighter weave. The others all have pretty much the same coarse weave. In any case, remember that flour sacks would not be as coarse as feed sacks. I'm thinking that perhaps the plaid, as you suggested, would be a flour sack. It has a tighter weave. The yellow one is apprx 2 yards. I don't know that it would be a sack, unless it was a big sack. I find the number intreguing [13822 - 64 x 60) There aren't any kinds of wholes along the salvage on that one. It's clean hole wise. I don't think it's faded (it's not bright either). It's just a light colour. Thanks for your input. I appreciate it. Although I have no intention of selling for $$, I may be bribed to share ;o) . -- Carole Champlain, NY http://photos.yahoo.com/ceridwen_rhea |

Thanks Lisae, I appreciate your feeback. I think I'll get a book on fabric.
I'm just curious at this point. Of course I'll be looking more closely next time I go to rummage sales in this neighborhood. It's an old farming community. -- Carole Champlain, NY http://photos.yahoo.com/ceridwen_rhea "lisae" wrote in message oups.com... They are indeed feedsacks. Those are horrid, especially that plaid. You might as well send them to me.

frood wrote: Those are horrid, especially that plaid. You might as well send them to me. Need my address? She was warned... I don't know about horrid, but I find that some feed sacks are hard to work with, as the scale is much larger than other fabrics. You need a lot of feed sacks to get a feed sack quilt to really work, in my opinion. lisae |
