Oh, Marjean - that just sucks!!!
See, I know this is going to happen to a lot of established bead sellers on ebay. The stores were expensive enough to begin with - but now they are just too expensive for a lot of people. The ones who will survive are the larger stores. Notice that the Featured and Anchor stores are not having to pay any increase in monthly subscription. It's as if ebay wants to cater to the large businesses and leave the smaller mom and pop business out in the cold. I am sure that this is a fine business decision for *them*, but seriously, they increased prices already not too long ago. Ebay is one of the most successful web entites ever. So I just don't see why they are doing this. Auctions are still doable for those of us who can make our own beads - there's still a good balance of supply and demand. But resalers are going to have a really hard time staying in business unless they're huge. Marjean - are you able to do sales on a website - I am sure your loyal customers will follow you anywhere! -- Kandice Seeber Air & Earth Designs http://www.lampwork.net I have reached a resistance point for my bead prices and have been fighting the Wally World mentality that seems to permeate the bead market on eBay. Once the increases go into effect I will be effectively forking over 11% of every sale I make to eBay in the form of insertion fees, final value fees AND PayPal fees. And that doesn't cover the cost of my store subscription, my auction management program subscription and my eBay reports subscription, which will come to another $46.00 a month. And what do I get for all of that?? No exposure when people do searches because store items don't regularly show up in the results. So while the store idea worked for me, saved me money in the long run for insertion fees, this increase may just prove to be the final nail in the coffin of Halsey Trading Company. Haven't made a final decision yet, but I may just close the business down this spring. I'm even thinking of trashing my trip to Tucson and just eating the airfare cost - don't really want to pay out more money for hotel/car rental if I'm not staying in business. Perhaps it's just time to move on to something else! I understand slight increases at regular intervals. But this is a huge increase. 60-100%. I agree that for auctions, this isn't a huge deal, and can even help cull the imported stuff and bring us some exposure. But for stores, this is major, and it will be reflected in glass prices on ebay for sure - and likely bead prices as well. Not good for the buyers. I do agree that this means that people will likely move inventory to off-ebay websites, and buyers will move with that inventory. Not good for ebay. But oh, well. LOL Why I will probably do is close my store, have a huge sale and then keep doing auctions. Auctions are good advertising for sure. But the basic ebay storefront has become useless. If they are going to raise the prices, they need to raise the exposure that stores get. -- Kandice Seeber Air & Earth Designs http://www.lampwork.net I think it's just the course of business. All prices rise. From a business standpoint, I like a little higher fee. It might make people think twice about what they list. For stores I think it helps them to not be holding tanks for what didn't sell at auction...at least that is what mine was at the time. It's like a bottomless free re-list pit for some people. Sorry if that sounds callous, but I'm looking at my auctions getting drowned in imported stuff selling for peanuts or less and I was drowning my own auctions with my non-selling store items. I can do that just fine on my already paid for web site, thank you very much. As for people selling their personal stuff, it is a bit sad but just work it into the price and there shouldn't be a problem. Just a heads up - there's now a petition you can sign if you are against the
ebay fees. There are over 1500 signatures so far. Please, if you are against these fees, go over there and sign! ~~~~~You know, it's not as if eBay doesn't make a ton of money. Why the
rate increase? Sheesh.~~~ I should've said why the huge% rate increase. A rate increase, sure -- but 60%-100%? That's just rape. |

I love the Aqua plunge and the Caribbean Blue but unfortunately I do not do Paypal. Shirley In message . net, Jim Moore writes I guess a rate increase is OK. Ebay is still the cheapest way to sell your "stuff" What annoys me is there annual notices of having a "Banner Year" and thanks to all you sellers and buyers for making Ebay such a success!! Then......a month later comes a rate increase. Greed? I am an old man in my 70's. I'm a retired jeweler. A real jeweler who was able to cast, channel set diamonds, cut stones and everything else that went with it. I could do it all. Now my eyes are not so good and I'm too old to do shows anymore. I used to sell gemstones. mostly precious and mount them while you wait in custom settings that I had made out of gold. A few years ago I saw someone make a lampwork bead and fell in love instantly. Now I make a few bucks to supplement my Soc. Sec. and that works out pretty good. But if Meg keeps on jacking up the price to peddle my "stuff" on her site, I will have to change my plan. I also have a website www.terrafirmabeads.com It seems that the people that I sell to on ebay (many repeat customers) will not buy from my website. I even offer free shipping. I just don't get it. Some interesting threads on the subject - lots of good mathematical info for

Haw! You know, it went through my head that a one-day boycott of eBay would bring them to their KNEES. But it's hardly realistic. (Talk about a mammoth effort) |

Yep, there are so many ebayers who don't read the forums, it would be really
hard to get a large number of people to boycott. But here's some interesting information - so far, there have been something like 1500 store closures since this morning. According to the boards, thats about 1% of ebay stores. In one day - that's pretty substantial. -- Kandice Seeber Air & Earth Designs http://www.lampwork.net ~~~I don't know about boycotting, personally~~~ Haw!
