OT totally - 2 kind thoughts asked for.
I pray the young mother and baby get the medical help and financial help they need and they will be well after this experience. What a sad situation from sooooo many angles.
As far as your dog bite goes, many years ago I took my sons and St. Bernard to my office to do some filing on a Sunday morning before we went on a picnic. Not a smart idea, but I did. :-/ The pup jumped thru a huge plate glass window inside the office area and left a big hole in the glass! My homeowner's insurance covered the damage less my deductible- but the dog's minor injuries were my responsibility at the vet's office. (Thank goodness she only had two small cuts in her eyebrow area.) Perhaps your insurance laws also cover damages/injuries caused by a homeowner's dog? I hope you can get the neighbor to cooperate and make things right with you. Being the owner of three large dogs, I am very aware of my responsibilities- and the safety of both humans and my dogs. My dogs are specifically listed in my homeowner's insurance policy- and owning certain breeds will prevent this company issuing a policy. Owners of Rotties and pit bulls (and a few other breeds, as well) cannot be insured by this particular company. It really isn't fair since their are some very sweet and well-trained dogs of those breeds but the breeds have a 'reputation'. I wish more people were aware of their responsibilities in dog ownership..... it makes it more difficult for those of us who are informed, aware and careful. (sigh) Leslie & The Furbabuies in MO. The daughter was about 16 weeks pregnant and whilst in Florida she had pregnancy complications and the bady was born premature in a hospital there. It has made the national news here because her travel insurance won't cover as it is an 'already existing condition' (of pregnancy) and the babe is in intensive care in Florida racking up huge costs daily in care. It is a most unusual case and horrific for the family concerned without us questioning why one would travel overseas advanced in pregnancy. I wonder if it has made the news in the US, maybe just in Florida. Not sure if solutions are forthcoming; I think the family is trying to raise funds here. The mother remains there, with her babe in ICU, in Ranald McDonald housing whilst the rest of the family have returned to Australia. The mother is there with no friends or familiar surroundings. Just asking for kind thoughts for them. My little drama pales into insignificance in comparison -- I got attacked by a neighbour's mixed breed dog 3 weeks ago. The dog latched onto my sandaled foot and gave me 4 very deep wounds which have been treated with very strong antibiotics, not stitched because of infection worries. All clear now and healing well, but the emotional healing is taking a little longer (sigh). Very traumatic. The dog was behind a solid gate so I had no idea it was there and of course he didn't know I was about to open the gate. The neighbours (we don't know them well but always had a cordial relationship with them) are being non-cooperative so I am seeking legal advice to try and recoup my medical and out of pocket expenses (over $1500). A little prayer for me tacked on the babe's prayer will help me too. Hugs Bronnie OZ |

The problem with the dog attack is, like all good neighbours, WE assumed that they would immediately admit liability. I would say most, if not all, house insurance in Australia has public liability automatically factored in. You slip on my wet front step; my cat/dog attacks - its covered. I don't know what the neighbour's position is as they won't have a meeting with us. The other complication is that I felt morally bound (and 3 doctors attending me advised me to do so) to report the dog attack to the council. What if I had been holding a small child by the hand at the gate? I didn't rush that decision, 2 weeks, but the neighbours went on a rant when they found out. And I was waiting for final medical bills to come in before talking about that. They haven't given us a chance to talk calmly and rationally about it. It looks like that I will have to submit a 'civil liability' claim with them. I have filled out the forms and am seeing a lawyer tomorrow, to assist me in filing it (no charge which is nice). I had no intention about loading up the claim with 'pain and suffering, trauma' (yes, I will be seeing a counsellor), but now I definitely will - their position is causing me stress. Lesson: you can't second-guess people's stance, prepare for 3 outcomes, and they go with a 4th. Hugs Bronnie |

Hugs Bronnie OZ Leslie, my BIL had, for a number of years, pit bulls. They were darlings. Let the kids sleep on them, etc. But, as you say, because of the breed, needed to pay extra for homeowners insurance. Same insurance company does not require us to pay extra for our labs. Bronnie, I understand why you have waited to deal with your neighbors. Shouldn't make a difference. They are just being 'difficult' I think. I would know what my dog did when and would take care of the issue regardless of (acceptable - i.e., within weeks; couple of months) of time lapsed. It's unfortunate that you have to go to these lengths and I hope your efforts prevail. Kim in NJ |
