Default Progress on BOM quilt top

I've managed to layer and pin the quilt top/backing/batting sandwich.
I've stitched in the ditch (or as close as these hands and eyes can
manage) and now I'm doing freeform free-motion feathers in the sashing
strips. I'm marking the spine line with chalk, but that's the only
marking required, so they go pretty quickly! (No longarm, no midarm,
no stitch regulator....sigh.) I've finished five strips and only have
about a bazillion more to do. By the time I finish those I may have
decided what to do inside the cornerstones, the blocks themselves, and
for the border!!!

Carole, you do GREAT on those feathers! (I need to do some serious thinking
about learning to do those.) That quilt is sooooo lovely- the
colors/fabrics, the designs, the piecing and appliqué and now the quilting!
Great job!

Thanks, Leslie. I've watched a few videos on how to do feathers, and
I've practiced a lot! It finally started making sense to me. Patsy
Thompson has a video about doing feathers and I found it very easy to
follow. She does her demonstrating on a domestic machine. I've just
ordered another of her videos about doing vines and leaves.

The quilt is coming together better than I expected, given that it is
basically a sampler!

Thanks, Roberta. When I FIRST started trying to do feathers, it was
very frustrating and they weren't smooth or well-shaped. The more I
practiced, and the more I re-watched the videos, the better they got.
I think it's easier to do free-form where they don't have to all look
the same than to try to do very consistent plumes.

That quilting is absolutely wonderful Carole. Who needs a Long Arm! lol.So
looking forward to the finished quilt. Are the safety pins curved ? I see
you have lots in there. Thats maybe where I go wrong!

Thank you! Most of the pins are curved and small, although I ran out
of those so there are a few straight and a few larger pins. (I've
bought more small curved ones since then.) I find that the more I
pin, the fewer puckers I get on the back side. I don't have a good
place to spray baste without worrying about the fumes and I tend to be
sensitive to things like that. I pin baste on my large white folding
table, stretching everything on the table top as tautly as I can, and
letting the rest hang over the edges. After that part is pinned very
securely, I pull it to an unpinned part and repeat the "stretching
tautly" part before pinning. It's easier on my back than getting down
on the floor.

Just beautiful, Carole. Maybe I'll get one of those videos!

The DVDs are kind of pricey - $29.95, but there is so much helpful
information on them that I decided that it was worth buying a couple
of them. She has video clips from each DVD, ranging from about 3
minutes to 10 minutes on her website, so that you can get a pretty
good idea of what you are buying. She also has free downloads of the
designs from each DVD and once you've got the techniques, you can
pretty much figure out how to do the designs from the other DVDs.

She's also nice and helpful. I e-mailed her through "The Quilt Show"
since she is a member. I sent her a link to a picture that showed
what I already knew how to do and asked for her advice as to which DVD
I might find the most helpful. She answered back promptly and she was
the one who suggested I might not need the DVD at all, just the free
downloads of her patterns.

No affiliation here but the site is
http://www.patsythompsondesigns.com and then you click on the
Instruction DVD section (or something similar to that.)
