Yonick Ask three accomplished designers to create around a gemstone carved by one talented lapidary and what do you get? Three unique designs that not only capture the complexity of this one-of-a-kind stone, but also reflect the distinctive signature styles of each designer. On the following pages, Klecka, Crevoshay, and Schneider tell why their design choices complement the beauty of this exceptional gemstone while conveying their personal styles.... Marketing - Communication With Jewelry Photography By Christel Trimborn The photography of jewelry can achieve a whole lot more than just depicting products. It can focus on unique details that generate very different feelings and can contribute to the visual communication of the jewelry's inspiration. Unfortunately, we see time and again that jewelry designers adopt a strangely ambivalent position when faced with how to communicate their products. This applies in particular to jewelry manufacturers in the initial stages of their careers. It is a crying shame that there are so many designers able to achieve the highest standards of precision and perfect craftsmanship in the production of jewelry and then proceed to take inferior photos of it that in no way do justice to their own excellent work.... Complete Story: http://www.ganoksin.com/borisat/nena...hotography.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Colored Stone Annual Retail Survey 2005 By Suzanne Wade A decade ago, emerald, ruby, and sapphire routinely topped Colored Stone's annual best seller list, as befitted the colored stones known in the trade as the "Big Three." They were "precious" stones, while their equally colorful but lesser-known cousins held the dubious distinction of being "semiprecious." But the Big Three's once-unassailable dominance has faded in recent years. In 1999, tanzanite cracked the top three, pushing emerald to fourth place. Pearl followed suit in 2001, when it appeared in the number two slot, as did fancy sapphire in 2004.... Complete Story: http://www.ganoksin.com/borisat/nena...-survey-05.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Introduction to Weaving with Sheet and Wire By Barbara M. Berk Textile techniques are traditionally worked with fibers such as linen, cotton and silk. However, they can also be applied to metal. I weave high karat gold and platinum sheet and wire by hand. The process of weaving creates "fabric". I shape that "fabric" into ribbons and ruffles, spirals and loops, which become earrings, brooches, necklaces and pendants. I create two collections of limited production and one-of-a-kind jewelry, each based on a different technique.... Complete Story: http://www.ganoksin.com/borisat/nenam/metal-weaving.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. Making a Multi-grit Sanding Stick By Jurgen J. Maerz BW Simon in Spartanburg, South Carolina, made this handy tool for finishing jewelry. I'd like to thank him for allowing me to share this bench trick with you.... Complete Story: http://www.ganoksin.com/borisat/nena...ding-stick.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. Notes on Asbestos and Jewelers By Charles Lewton-Brain Asbestos is a real problem for jewelers. When I was first a student in 1974, we had a bucket of loose asbestos fibers under the soldering bench; we would take a handful and moisten it with water to form a clay-like blob to hold things together for soldering. This would be unthinkable today.... Complete Story: http://www.ganoksin.com/borisat/nena...d-jewelers.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7. Some Safety Notes Regarding Sand Casting By Charles Lewton-Brain Sand casting is used extensively for large-scale casting, such as engine blocks, and the grates that one sees around trees in cities on sidewalks, and sand casting used to be the primary method of casting in the jewelry field, and still, in some places, it remains important for larger components and parts, such as one finds on vessels, so sand casting is used in the silversmithing industry still....
