PRESS RELEASE FOR SOUTH FLORIDA INTERGALACTIC BEAD FESTIVAL

Pompano Beach, FL The South Florida Intergalactic Bead Festival will take
place 10AM-5PM Saturday, Oct 18 and Sunday, Oct 19. Thirty-nine vendors from
twelve states will show and sell their wares of ancient to modern beads,
bead books, beading supplies, and finished beads, at the Pompano Beach Civic
Center - 1801 N.E. 6TH St. Pompano Beach, FL 33060 From I-95 Exit 36 east on
Atlantic Blvd. north on US ROUTE 1 (FEDERAL HIGHWAY), then west on 6TH St.
An interesting mix of history and art, this bead extravaganza will feature
over one hundred ten tables representing the country's finest bead vendors.
The fascination with beads is not a new one. People have been admiring,
wearing, and praying with beads for over forty thousand years. According to
Christopher England, the man behind Intergalactic Bead Shows, "Beads are not
a passing fancy. In fact, in the many years we have been hosting bead shows,
beads have only grown in popularity." When asked why he thought that was,
England's reply was noncommittal. "Perhaps it is because of the satisfaction
that comes from applying time and concentration to a small vial of beads to
create a three-dimensional piece of jewelry or sculpture. Or, it could be
the instant gratification found by stringing a collection of beads into
something unique that you can wear that evening. Maybe it is the inspiration
one gets from seeing other people's creativity come alive. Or, as one who
has attended an Intergalactic Bead Show can tell you, it may simply be the
experience of seeing so many colors, textures, and patterns together in one
arena that lends itself to the bead frenzy. Attending our shows is like
entering a room full of potential." Indeed, this weekend's South Florida
Intergalactic Bead Festival will be the premier place to harness the
potential of antique and modern beads of every size, description, and
material. The festival will also feature bead artists and shops as listed
below.
What a treat it will be for festival attendees to be able to rub elbows
with the National Bead Society's Glass Beadmakers of the Year for the past
three years - They are as follows: 2002 honorary Patti Cahill, Dyed in the
Fire of Mars Hill, NC; 2003 honorary Lea Zinke, Jewelz of Clearwater, FL;
and the just announced honorary for 2004, Beth Olson, Olson Glass,
Kissimmee, FL. While each artist has a unique style and method of making
her beads, the basic underlying technique and age-old tradition remain the
same. Zinke specializes in garden floral beads, Cahill in her vividly
colored and precisely patterned dot beads, and Olson in her amazing use of
sculpture and creature forms. Each of these women has made a name for her
self in the glass beadmaking world.
Glenda Paunonen, local storeowner of Crystal Creations, West Palm
Beach, FL, will be doing double service this weekend. Besides having her
shop serve as a local welcome center for the festival, at the show Glenda
will be hosting demonstrations of various beading techniques such as
wire-work and needle/thread crocheting. Aside from being the largest, most
complete bead, crystal, gem & mineral shop in South Florida, Crystal
Creations has a Bead Institute that offers over 95 different beading
classes, covering all aspects of beadwork. This, plus a monthly guest
artist workshop, allows them to share the beading frenzy seven days a week.
Theresa and Henry Rubin of Black Wolf Art Gallery, West Palm Beach, FL
boast some of the best quality, selection, and prices in the nation on their
specialty seed beads and charlottes. The seed beads you will find at their
table all have special cuts or facets, making them sparkle just a bit more
than the ordinary seed bead. Black Wolf Art Gallery carries multiple sizes
of Japanese Delica beads and crystals, and they cater to beaders of all
experience levels with their outstanding selection of fire polish beads,
needles/threads, silver and copper beads and findings, furnace glass, animal
beads, and vintage chevrons. In business for over 40 years, the Rubins also
make their beads available by mail order.
Local new age and metaphysical products distributor, Elizabeth Bird,
The Gemstone Factory, Margate, FL will also be on hand to welcome festival
attendees to Pompano Beach. Bird carries a wonderful selection of tumbled
and faceted precious and semi-precious gemstones, as well as Bali silver
beads, freshwater pearls, and assorted wires and findings. For festival
attendees seeking the metaphysical properties of the stones, The Gemstone
Factory also carries books featuring such information. According to Bird,
her shoppers will be able to browse "a delicious assortment of stones",
ranging from the better know lapis, coral, malachite, rose quartz, and
citrine, to the lesser known sugilite and kunzite. Bird's selection also
includes high-end faceted tourmaline and citrine stones, as well as tumbled
stone feature beads carved into shapes such as stars, moons, and roses.
Local vendors Robert & Susan Onderlinde, C & S Beads, Fort Lauderdale,
FL have a unique history with beads. Former owners of three bead shops in
the 70's, they have taken a long break away from the bead world, only to
re-invent their business by operating from a warehouse rather than a retail
store. Susan is a lampwork glass beadmaker, and in addition to offering her
beads and those of other American glass beadmakers, their tables will be
filled with Czech handmade glass beads, Swarovski crystals, Bali silver,
gemstone beads and matching pendants, and gold-filled and sterling findings.
Visitors to this weekend's festival are sure to find something to
delight them from the beads ranging from historical to modern, handcrafted
to mass produced, natural materials to the newest in synthetic technology.
Along with beads and bead-making supplies there will be numerous finished
pieces to choose from, including beaded bracelets, pendants, necklaces, and
earrings. The various artists, vendors, and collectors brought together by
The South Florida Intergalactic Bead Festival will be bringing Pompano Beach
the best selection of beads in the galaxy. Let the creativity begin!
