Video has arrived at Ganoksin!

Sometimes, the written word on a process performed in the jewelry
trade like metal casting, pales in comparison to the beauty of
watching molten metal in action.

Now available for online viewing, Daniel Ballard from PM West, shows
viewers the seductive glamour of making grain and casting. Blaine
Lewis from New Approach School for Jewelers teaches us how to sharpen
a graver and why it is important to keep them sharp. These are just a
few of the many offerings you will find at the Video Library!

1. Elegant Vessels - the work of Michael Boyd

Jewelry artist Michael Boyd fills his cup with newfound forms and
shapes. Well known for his contemporary roll-on cuff bracelets of
colorful stones and mixed metals, Boyd captured me from the start
with his architectural designs. While Boyd remains on the cutting
edge of contemporary jewelry design , he has branched out. For the
first time, he is introducing to the public his hand-fabricated
teapots and vessels made from stone and mixed metals.....

2. The Metalsmith Papers
Lamination of Non Ferrous Metals by Diffusion -
Adaptations of the Traditional Japanese Technique of Mokume-Gane

We have been interested in Mokume-gane for a number of years. The
only information we could find was by the soldering of different
metals, cutting in half, resoldering to increase the number of layers
and then exposing those laminates by punching from the reverse side
and removing those embossments or by carving drilling, etching from
the top. These methods have many drawbacks; namely, air pockets,
cracking and peeling. Its limitations are basically that it cannot be
effectively formed or raised into complex forms. During a recent trip
to Japan we visited three craftsmen who practiced Mokume-gane and
worked with one of them……

5. Sheet Metal Tool Modification for quick, tight, crimping

Sheet Metal Tool Modification, Look for: WISS Hand Seamer (as LAST
resort BRAMEC or VISE-GRIP) sheet metal bending tools and modify as
shown. Recommended for quick, tight crimping! I prefer the Wiss Hand
Seamer Model HS-1 or as a LAST resort you can purchase Vise-Grip
Locking Sheet Metal Tool #23 or Bramec sheet metal tool-straight
handle....

6. Metal Corrugation - Tool Modification of Industrial Tube Wringer

Following the 2002 SNAG conference Barbara Minor forwarded this tool

7. Metal Corrugation from a Coil

While researching ancient design I have been fascinated with basic
shapes from the Paleolithic, Neolithic, ancient Celts, pictographs
and petroglyphs. Did you know that zigzag or wave pattern was the
earliest symbolic motif recorded? Neanderthals used this symbol
around 40,000 B.C. or earlier. This pattern was used with and on
anthropomorphic, bird, fish, and phallic images and objects. The
symbol was used on Near East Neolithic ceramics and in reference
with the M sign mu, meaning water, in Egyptian hieroglyph and the
ancient Greek letter. The coil is another early motif incorporated
by ear ly man in artistic expression.....

8. Finishing the Inside of a Platinum Ring

Jeff Mathews has developed a process for polishing the inside of
platinum rings using 3M abrasive technology. To illustrate how he
performs the job, I follow his procedures using this hand fabricated
flat platinum band. Tool and forming marks are easily visible. The
quality and identification marki ng has been completed.....

9. 3M XR and Scotch-Brite Wheels

3M XR wheels, formerly known as XK wheels are ideal for sprue
removal and smooth deburring with minor surface reduction. A channel
can be created in the wheel for repetitive multiple part processing.
They replace stone wheels, have superior edge retention and last up
to 4 times longer. The side of the wheel can be used as a lap to
produce crisp edges and they generate less waste than conventional
wheels.....
