In 1957 when I was going to live in a dorm with my Mom's encouragement I spent
half my meager savings to buy a 2 year old Featherweight complete with a buttonholer from someone who thought she would learn to sew and didn't like it. It stitched a lot of clothes including several wool suits, my wedding dress, drapes for our first house, a maternity wardrobe, lots of kids clothes. I kept it for the daughter I thought might arrive when I bought a new Viking in about 1966. We only had sons but I'm really glad I kept the Featherweight. It goes to classes and was used a lot when I taught my 1 and only granddaughter to sew -- we have 3 grandsons. Cheers, Faye in CO |

I have two. One dh and I found in an antique store for $35! Then I talked
her down to $31.50. This little machine sews like a dream and my sewing machine guy tells me that it is one of the best ones made! The other FW I got on EBay. It also sews like a dream. I love my little machines. hugs, la -- Leigh Anne Haygood The Scarlet Thread www.lahaygood.com Forget mistakes. Forget failures. Forget everything except what you're going to do now and do it. Our household has six FWs. The DW has an AG model and a Centennial model
either of which she likes to use for quilting better than her Janome. I have four in various stages of restoration. I'm always looking for the frogs I can turn into jewels. I've got several. Ummm, several more than several. You see, it all started
when I won the auction on one FW, and figured someone would come along and snipe the other FW I was bidding on that closed 20 minutes later. Nobody did, so I was the instant owner of two FWs. One of them was made in late 1950, and I haven't used it much (even though it is an excellent machine) -- the 1937 FW has been my workhorse for more than a year, mainly because it's sitting out most of the time! I also have a white (barely celery) FW, a freearm 222 FW, a tan FW, and a candidate for painting from 1957. I think that's all of them but there may be one more I'm forgetting about. Mine went on "vacation" with me about a year and a half ago. It was a
week-long quilt workshop in Taos, NM, so I suppose that makes it a "working" vacation. The FW worked, anyhow! I played. Dragonfly "LN (remove NOSPAM)" wrote in message ... Wow. Hi Everyone!
I really want to bid on a Featherweight on Ebay, but there are so many, and I'm sooo confused about which one to bid on. I know I want one made in the U.S. so I don't have to worry about the converter thing. What's the most important thing to look for in the info they give? I do look at the seller's feedback report. Any suggestions? Thanks, Paula "Dragonfly" wrote in message ... I've got several. Ummm, several more than several. I once sold a 301 on Ebay for a pretty high price and I had
forgotten to even mention that it sewed/ran and nobody asked. Get the Nancy Srebro Johneson book and sign up for the featherweight fanatics list and you'll get lots of good info to start with. Watch completed auctions too. If you aren't in a hurry prices on FW's usually go down after Valentine day. Taria aluap wrote: Hi Everyone! Hi Paula:
You don't have to worry about them being made in the US, just that they have a 110 volt motor. They did make some in Scotland with that kind of motor. My advice to you is to watch the Featherweight auctions for about two weeks. Don't worry about the supply running out, it seems to endless. Then make up your mind what you want in a machine. Do you want one that sews nicely but isn't exactly a beauty, or do you want one that is all black and shiny and has all the gold trim intact? I have been watching the Featherweight auctions for almost two months now and I can't tell you why one goes for $200 and another goes for $500. I do notice, though, that the more professionally a Featherweight is presented in pictures and presentation, the more it will sell for. I saw a really nice Featherweight go for $220 the other day. It was just as nice as the one that went for $400. Another thing to keep in mind. You might want to concentrate on auctions that end up mid-day on a week day. There will be a lot less bidders! And the final consideration. Don't bid on the auction until the last 10-20 seconds (depending on if it is a weekend or not). If you start bidding, you will just drive up the price of the machine. Figure out what you want to pay for a machine, find the one you want and make a last minute bid. If you don't get that one, I guarantee another just as nice will be around the next corner.
