Default How Much Does a Featherweight Weigh? (a bit OT)

Well, the decision has been made for Mom to move from her home in Louisville to
an Assisted Living facility in Paducah, where my brother and his family live.
(Hey, if a quilter has to move, Paducah is a great place, right? And if a
quilter's quilting daughter has to visit, Paducah is okay!) Anyway, she's
giving me her featherweight machine. I understand the name implies that they
are well-nigh weightless, but how much does one weigh? Can I carry it on to an
airplane? Will it fit under the seat or in the over head compartment? (Can't
afford to buy it a ticket!)

TIA,
joan

I took one once -it fit in the overhead bin in its case, with the whole
thing wrapped in a couple layers of bubble wrap. Had to send it through the
security Xray twice, they had trouble identifying it first time through. My
advice: leave off the bubble wrap in case you need to open it, but do put it
in some kind of sturdy bag to protect the case from scratches. Don't know if
you'll have trouble with the weight. The machine by itself is 11 pounds.
Maybe pack the accessories in your check-in luggage?

The Crown Royal bags are perfect for storing the cord
set/pedals of portable machines. Soft and they have a
drawstring. Don't drink the stuff but happened on a
bunch of them at the swap meet.

Protecting the case from scratches is good. Keep the key on a
chain around your neck, so you can open the case for inspection.

Here's a tip for your ordinary use of the FW. To protect the
lovely SM from scratches, you should contain the cord. This is
particularly important when going to class. Yes, the case may
have a clip for holding the wrapped cord, but if you are in a
hurry to shop or eat lunch you may forget to do it up right.

I just forgo the clip and slip the bundled cord into a nice soft
sock. It is a purple and white sock. Once MSM bought two pairs of
those cool socks ... one for each of us. They were so neat
looking and so comfy, we both loved them to bits. Only one of my
socks did not have any holes, so that is the one I use for the
cord. When I use it I think of my late, great Mom. 8)

Enjoy the FW! PAT in VA/USA

Yes, those are nice, but don't have any Sox Appeal!!
I do recall seeing some quilts that were made up of the purple CR
bags (or is that RC?)

Pat, you reminded me: I learned to put a scrap of fleece or bubble-wrap at
the end of my FW before I fold it up for storage. Only after I got
scratches
on the finish, however. I also learned to keep the thread-cutter turned to
the
back instead of the end, for the same reason.

Thank you all for your hints. I've never really paid close attention to Mom's
FW, so we'll have some getting acquainted to do!

Hi Taria, My DH worked for Seagram for 29 years. I have a great collection
of those bags. I am saving up complimentary fabrics to make a quilt. That
way when you take a sip while the quilt is on your lap you are warmed inside
and out! :-)
