Okay, friends. You brag about Janome. Here's your chance to shine.
Neighbor has a Janome 1600. She asked if I could help her adjust
'decorative' stitches to her needs.
"Sure" I thought. I'd read the manual and she could punch the buttons.
We weren't trying to embroider the Mona Lisa in cursive or nothing -
just wanted to make a very basic simple curved stitch with a leaf
occasionally.
NO WAY.
All we got was some sort of message on the screen that said something
like 'unavailable' or 'can't be done'.
I speak: Bernina, Phaff and a few phrases in Viking; nothing in Janome.
Just is no reason why she can't make the vine stitch longer.
How? Help. Polly

I don't have a 1600 but I am a Janome fan. Will I do? ;-)

If I understand your question correctly what you want to do is lengthen the vine/leaf stitching sequence. But that wouldn't work because the stitches between the leaves would lengthen and so would the individual leaf stitches- which would make the leaf just a series of improperly spaced-out zig-zags rather than the compacted stitches to look like a leaf. That's why the machine refuses to cooperate with any adjustments you attempt. Since I don't know that model machine maybe you can find a wavy stitch similar to the stitches between the leaves and program the machine to do some 'regular' wavy stitches and then the leaf stitch sequence and then more of the regular wavy stitches?

That's the best I can come up with..... good luck solving your problem. It's a tough one. (I love the leaf stitch as is, but I guess your friend needs something different.)

Don't know about the 1600 I'm afraid, Polly. However, I do seem to
remember that I wasn't able to alter the size in something I once tried.
Oh - I think it might have been 'letters'? One thing does occur to me
(prompted by the built-in over I bought for here g): it is possible
that the array of stitches and how to do them, as shown in the manual,
covers more than one model of machine? If so, it might be that the
model she has is similar to, but not identical to, another one.
My solution? Contact Janome and ask! Or, go to the Janome users online
group and ask them?
Sandy might have a better idea than I.

Howdy!

My answer exactly, Pat: ask Janome, ask the online users group. ;-)

Me: I don't use the decorative stitches; there are many on the
Memory Craft 6500, and I've played w/ them. But I don't use them.
I bought the Janome for a clean, crisp, accurate stitch, & a dependable
and quiet machine. Love it!

R/Sandy - yes, that was a small shrug of shoulders & a soft "I dunno'..."

I'm not Sandy or Pat but and I usually mostly curse at my Janome
but I can tell you the 6600 has an adjustment knob/button on the
front on the machine near the bottom middle (it is hidden if you
have the machine set down inside a cabinet with the table flush)
You can program stitches and the manual is a big help for that.
I have asked and gotten responses on Janome page and there is
a yahoo group for 6500/6600 users with a lot of smart folks.
Marcella knows a lot about these machines too. Do you mean
a 1600 though or 6600?

The 1600 is a straight stitch only machine. If that's the machine she
has, then the problem is solved - she can't adjust a stitch she doesn't
have :-)

Could you double check the model number for us? If she has a different
machine we can look at the correct manual on line and see what might be
happening.

Oh Glory! I'm glad I didn't go to a Janome group and ask that question
when I obviously don't know what I'm talking about. ( You all know me and
are used to it.) I do know that it has lots of stitches but will have to
call her and ask her to look again at the model number. Thank you so much.
Maybe I'd better just trot down the lane and see for myself if it has an
adjustment knob. Thank you all so much. Polly

Marcella, that's what I was going to say. I use my decorative stitches pretty often, and I adjust them. I've never had one tell me it wasn't available.. Might be the machine needs to be checked out. My Janomes are all agreeable machines and never yell at me unless I put the bobbin in upside down.

Even though I have a Janome 4800 I haven't used the embroidery stitches in a
very, very, very long time so this might be totally out in left field. Does
she have the correct foot on to do the design she wants to do? I can't
remember for sure but I think the machine knows which foot is attached. It
may not let her program a stitch that can't be completed using the wrong
foot.
