Howdy!
"The Great American Quilt" series by Penny McMorris.
I have most of these 1/2-hour programs on Beta tape.

Here in Seattle, on Saturday mornings, we have something like 3 hours of
quilting programs on PBS. Though I rarely get to watch all 3 hours in
the summer time, I make a a priority in the winter. My question is -
what is your favorite quilting show? I love Fons and Porter, but a
couple of the instructors on other shows realllllllly bug me!!! Who do
you think has the most useful information??

I'm with you Jo ..... even 1/2 hour would be great.

There may be something on pay (cable) but we only have 'free to air'

By far - Fons & Porter!! I think one or maybe both have a teaching back

good teacher for organization and lack of theatrics. They don't interrupt
or talk over their guest speakers and teach just good common sense quilting.

And they don't talk down to the viewers as if we are in kindergarten.
I love that.

I saw Eleanor Burns talk about why she tosses the scraps over her shoulder.
When she first started the show, I guess she was putting the scraps in a
pile on her cutting table & the producer didn't like it. She was joking
around & said - what do you want me to do - toss them over my shoulder? And
that's how it started & she's been doing it ever since. It's one of her
trademarks, I guess.

I'm glad you said that about Eleanor Burns. I usually like her more
traditional quilts and patterns, but holy cow - what's with the tossing
the scraps over her shoulder? Who sweeps those up? I'm afraid I'd be
knee deep in scraps in my sewing room if I waited for someone to come
around and clean up after me.

Just saw part of sewing with nancy. I don't enjoy as much the sewing
shows, or eleanor burns with her kintergarden style of talking. They
used to show another I liked a lot, cannot remember her name right now..
the one with the catchy song that starts with "can you imagine a ?
gift.. something about layers.... " man, I am getting old...

Until QNN, I had never seen Fons and Porter or Eleanor Burns. I like them
both. F&P because of the information given, and EB because she is just
having so much fun, she's fun to watch.

I find Kaye Wood to be really irritating; I'm not sure why. It's not her; I
think it's the poor production values that turn me off--her microphone
always buzzes on her 's' sounds-drives me nuts.

I record them all and then watch them on fast forward during my lunch
break. Since I work from home and set my own schedule that lunch break
can be a bit long if the programs are good. Even a show where I don't
like the host occasionally has a good guest. If I really like the
program or the tip I rerecord it onto another tape which contains
snippets of programs I wanted to keep. Some programs repeat so much
that just a glimpse of the opening and I know I can delete that one.

I think Simply Quilts has done the most for enlarging the quilting
community. I hear many people say they watch the program but don't
quilt. Most are afraid to start. I am glad Alex has written more books
lately because those who only know quilting from her show will go
looking for her books and might one day have the courage to start
stitching.

WOW! Susan you're so organized! What a great idea. I take notes on stuff
a like, but sometimes I write so fast I don't understand my own
directions when I dig them out again. Luckily, I usually write down the
pattern and/or book - author so I have backup. I like Alex too - she
moves along at a pretty good clip.

I don't watch them all because as you say...some of the host drive me
crazy. But, I record every Fons & Porter and have a couple that I have
watched over and over. Besides that, I always check in on Simply
Quilts to see if I have seen it or want to see it again.

Sounds like we are really lucky to have 3 hours of quilting every
Saturday.

I absolutely hate listening to Eleanor Burns. She talks like a really bad
kindergarten teach who thinks her students are all idiots. I hate that sing
song cadence. The throwing strips of fabric is juvenile and offensive to
anyone who has to clean up their own mess. I turn her off in a heart beat.
Makes me shudder all over.

I think the show you're wondering about is the one with Georgia
Bonesteel??? I like her too - her "rocking" quilting technique
fascinates me. I think that must take decades of practice.
