I went through a period
where I was too thin primarily due to stress, and I didn't feel like I
had reached some fabulous goal. I felt skinny and bony.

Because its not "supposed" to be about how you feel---just about how you look.
"Better to Look Marvelous, than to Feel Marvelous" was what Billy Crystal said
as "Ricardo Montoban", right?

Or just raise their eyebrows at the question, and say nothing.

are we actually seeing different COLORS, because of eye/brain
differences, or did we just learn to call them different things?

I think we are actually seeing differently--the eye has rods and cones in
different amounts in different people.

But Sooz, it's not mere "thin" ness that has a value, it's being thing
with boobs and hips... skinny but till somehow woman-shaped. If you're
not, you can feel very awkward and inadequate. I went through a period
where I was too thin primarily due to stress, and I didn't feel like I
had reached some fabulous goal. I felt skinny and bony.

I think I should repeat here that I've been seriously thin most of my life. I
was 5'7" and 92 pounds for a while, and a size 6 or 8 for the huge bulk of my
years. I'm not talking about thin women as some Other that I think should do
this or that, I'm talking about me. I was flat as a board for many years. And
I was a model in NYC, so I know what the "perfect" thin is, and how people can
judge you based on your looks. If you think people judge different shapes and
sizes out in the general public, you haven't *seen* real judgment at all. The
fashion business is crueler than you could ever imagine IRL.

I was too skinny for years due to stress as well. The only reason I'm a size
12 today is because of the meds I take. I'm just saying this: It's a LOT
different being thin than it is being heavy when it comes to other people's
cruelty.

When you have something the entire society is striving to obtain, you're going
to be the target of other people's sour grapes, and they're going to say
things. It's not the same as the things people say to heavy folks. The motive
is completely different. I'm saying I was there, in the Skinny Trenches, for
30 years, and I KNOW.

You have to take what people say with a grain of salt, because it's envy. If
you get upset over it, well, I understand that you don't like it, but it isn't
the same as what heavy people endure. The folks who yell insults at a heavy
woman aren't coming from the same place as someone who wishes they were thin
sniping at a skinny minnie. So I'm saying stop feeling sorry for yourself,
brush yourself off, and move on, because it's not the same problem at all.
People envy skinny folks, and for some reason, a lot of people are angered and
repulsed by heavy folks. *It isn't the same*. I'm kind of stunned that it
would be seen as the same. It's like crying, "I endure bias too!" when you
ain't a black sistah. You really can't know what their pain is like.

Still, a lot more women are denied jobs for being too large than for being
too small.

Talking about bias!

Okay -- I used to read a lot of X-Files fanfic, and I kept hearing the word
slash -- what the heck is "slash"?!?!?! But I never heard Mary Sue -- what is
that?

"Slash" is overtly sexual (between two characters) fanfic. It's more often used
to denote specifically homoerotic fiction, but I use it for X-rated stuff in
general -- note that my usage is a little off from what's generally accepted.
The term derives from homoerotic fanfic featuring Kirk & Spock, which was
generally abbreviated to "K/S", with a slash -- hence "slash".

A "Mary Sue" story is one in which the author brings herself (or, more rarely,
himself) into the action as a thinly-disguised character. "Mary Sue" (a common
sort of name for said character to have) may become the key character who Saves
The Day, or may develop a romantic relationship with the author's favorite
character, or both. They're generally considered a "lower" form of fanfic,
largely because many people write them as early efforts, and as a result the
writing quality tends to be, shall we say, ****ful. Although there are several
*published* Star Trek novels which are professionally-written Mary Sues, and if
done well, they can still be fun to read.

I'm going to go off on a slight tangent here, and it's about the issue of "get
over it". There's a lot of "folk wisdom" along the lines of "sticks and stones
may break my bones, but names will never hurt me" -- and it's SIMPLY NOT TRUE.
Telling someone that they shouldn't go out of their way to look for slights is
one thing. Telling someone that they're wrong to be hurt when someone is
deliberately *trying* to hurt them just gives abusers a free ride -- not only
can they say whatever they want, but if the victim gets upset IT'S HER OWN
FAULT. This is *wrong*; it's part of the cultural mindset that says bullying is
acceptable and that the VICTIM should adjust to it, rather than telling the
bullies to adjust to civilized standards of behavior. We will probably never be
completely rid of bullies -- but changing this attitude would certainly cut
down on the number of them.

And I think all I've been trying to say is that this isn't right, and I
don't wish to pretend as though it is. Envy is ugly, and the source of much
distress.

I will point out that I've not seen the thing from both sides. I've never
been really big. But I think that being cruel and hurtful is unacceptable
no matter who it's aimed at and what the excuse for it may be.

Laura

And I totally agree with this, Laura.
