But that still doesn't tell me WHY the area was named Israel and not
Judea. I'm not saying that culturally, there is no place people refer
to as Judea, I'm wondering WHY Israel was named Israel and not Judea

I think it had to do with the size of the State of Israel and the city of
Jerusalem. Israel is only a tiny part of the original territory called
Judea.

Actually, both Judea and Samaria are smaller than Israel, not the other
way around:

Romans referred to the whole area as Judea, even though the original
Judea was part of the kingdom of Israel. Talk about confusing.

I know when my DDH's uncle left Poland in about 1930 to go off with Herzl,
he didn't go to Judea or Israel. He went to Palestine. It wasn't until
after 1947 or 48 when it was declared a state, that it was back to being
called Israel.

The whole area has been named and renamed over and over again.

You are right there. As a ;ittle kid in England I was a stamp collector,
(still am actually) , and learned a lot more geography and history than
probably the average kid. Pre-TV etc. In fact I have a vivid memory of
the "wireless" talking of Italy, and I had a brown Italian stamp in my
hand. Prolly ( for Sheena) about 7 years old.

Anyway, yes, it was Palestine, and they has their own stamps. I am not
sure but for some reason "Palestine Free State" rings in the depths of
my memory.

Huh. Maybe because it rymes with Palestine Mandate? There are calls
now for a Palestine Free State, but there has not, to my knowledge
(which is certaily fallible) been a Palestine Free State in the past.
