Default HELP! with Pattern Math Please

Ok, I want to use this pattern to make the center "Star" for MIL
Christmas Stars Table Runner from my Christmas Swap Fabrics.

http://www.quilterscache.com/V_Z/Whi...tar2Block.html

I don't know how yet, and haven't tried paper piecing and don't want to
start today.

I printed the template, that says "Click here for regular template"

When I print it out, the size of the template is:
2 3/8" x 7 7/8" without the seam allowance
3" x 9 1/2" with the seam allowance

Marcia's instructions say -

"Using the template provided, cut eight different trapezoids from 2
1/2" x 7 1/2" strips..."

Ok, so what size should the template have been? I don't get it?

Please help,
Tina

Tina, maybe you should come play at my house. I'm dressing porcelean dolls
for the shelter for Christmas. No math. Just sturdy stitching. Embellish
until there's too much and then add some. You could enjoy this. Polly

Just a thought Tina -- check the scaling to be sure it is actually
printing at 100%. I don't know what browser, etc. you use so can't be
more specific.

Using Mozilla Firefox, I can click on a "print preview" and at the top
of the page it shows how it is scaled.

FYI, that is a 45 degree angle so you could probably draft your own
template with graph paper and a rotary ruler

It does sound like fun Polly. We are going to start on tree ornaments
this week. I am stitching together a bunch of scraps into big sheets,
quilting to batting with muslin backing and then letting the kids trace
cookie cutters on them. We will cut out stars, hearts, gingerbread
girls and boys, stockings, etc. and then sew buttons, beads etc. on for
eyes, nose, buttons etc. Then sew a piece of yarn at top to hang on
gifts/trees, etc. We are glueing pin backs to some for the grandmas in
the family.

The dolls definitely sound more my speed though! I love dolls and have
a small collection of porcelain indian girls.

Hugs,
Tina

I've just printed the template out and I get:

without seam allowance:

2.1/2 x 6"measuring along the lines.
The actual width without allowances is 1.3/4

With seam allowance:

3.1/4 x 7.1/4 measuring along the lines.
The actual width is 2.1/4

My printer scale said 100% (I had to hunt around a bit for this).

That should be right, shouldn't it, because 6" (without turnings) is
the size of the 1/4 block.

She seems to expect you to have 1/4" on both measurements to play with
-annoying if you are cutting two lengths and find the the second one
is fractionally too short. I always allow myself that 1/4" when Im
cutting one pre-cut piece into several sections!

Can only do maths by reading the numbers on the ruler!

Ok, so I'm still confused?

What you are saying, I think - is that it SHOULD print out
2 1/2 x 6 and 3 1/4 x 7 1/4 ?

To cut this trapezoid out of a piece/strip of fabric that is 2 1/2 x 7
1/2" ?

I'm so confused. Polly, make room for me at the doll table, it's
either that or weaving baskets!

Awww, Tina. Stand down. (That means "cool it".) Our Pat on the Hill is
still asleep. She can explain anything to anybody - she even makes it
simple enough for me to understand. Meanwhile, the little dolls are so
wonderful. I thought doing chenille on gold lame would be worth a try - so,
I tried it. It looks like sewing tinsel. You can come add some sparkle
while I do the hum-drum stuff. Pat gets up about six hours before we (?) do
so it may be awhile before she can smooth your path. Polly

He-he!
I'm up now !
Well, this solution isn't so much an explanation as a 'how I would do it
now'. I didn't chime in before, because the problem seemed to be a
computer one (which I certainly couldn't help with - I only cling on
with my fingertips to computer usage, let alone technology).

OK Tina.
I've no idea what to do with the printer, so I looked at the question
another way. I measured the template on the screen!
Or, if you just look at the diagram of the finished block, you will see
that the trapezia *have* to be 6" finished on the longest size, and the
base angles have to be 45 degrees. According to the screen
measurements, the depth of the trapezium is 1 3/4" finished.

*So, draw yourself a template: including seam allowances: of 7 1/4"
base, 45 degree base angles, 2 1/4" height.*

(The short/top side has eighths in it, but you don't need to bother with
that).
I'm not sure why the width of the strips is given as 2.5" - it would
seem a waste of effort to cut the strips and then have to re-cut the
width of the trapezia to 2 1/4"? However ...
Draw your template, cut the strips to 2 1/4" and then you'll just have
to cut the sloping sides.

Hope this helps - it is a lovely pattern.

It would not be hard to draft this -try it and see! Make a 6" square. Draw
both diagonals. Divide the square into 9 2" sections. Have a good look at
the design -it should be pretty clear which lines you need to draw to make
the shapes. Trace each one to a clean sheet of paper and add seam
allowances. The trapezoids ought to finish to 2.5" wide. You can use her
cutting instructions to make the small triangles. When you draft, make sure
to use a really sharp pencil.

Bingo! Yes, like Polly said, I knew Pat would solve my problem.

DH said the same thing, "Just redraw your own template" but I couldn't
figure out what size it SHOULD be if I redrew it. Problem solved.

Thank you so very, very much Pat and Roberta. Now I can draw it out.

Hugs,
Tina
