Default OT Java?

My computer keeps telling me to update Java. I can find no trace of
existing Java on my computer apart from an earlier update which I must
have obediently downloaded. Is this something I need? I hate to have
my hard drive cluttered up with unnecessary stuff.

Short answer, "most likely".

But not always! I just did that and it messed up some other things on
my machine. Our tech guy had to come and remove it.

Y'know, it would *really* be nice if, somehow, when these uploads come
through, it could tell you why you need it and programs it *may*
interfere with! The sad thing is, even computer people can't keep up
with everything coming out. sigh.

Probably need the JAVA, depending upon your computer and browser. JAVA is
scripting language that a lot of websites use for nicely presented
information.

It's odd that Joan had a problem with JAVA, unless something happened with a
downloading problem.

Anyhow, if you got a message that you need to update your JAVA, there is
likely some website you visit that uses JAVA. It's very commonly used by
web-geeks. Finding where it lives on your computer is not necessarily
trivial, but usually will be somewhere in a library of assets for your web
browser. What may have happened is that some resource you use has updated
and in order to run effectively needs the commensurate update in JAVA.

Thanks Ellice. That's what I thought but I don't feel sure of myself and
was reluctant to give the wrong information.

I know an update came up a couple of weeks ago to Java on my computer and I
haven't had any problem with it.

I am incredibly thankful for DH. We have an in-house network of 5-6
computers ( yup just two of us), so when these comes up, I yell at him
and ask if I should.

Most of the time it appears that Java is good...but the we have Windows
7 as the operating system...if one has an older one, our techies will
have the answer.

just answering the frustration point!

I was about to download it, in fact I started to do so, and then,
partway through, a little box came up informing me that I would receive,
for FREE, a Yahoo toolbar. No charge, great privilege. Now, it so
happens I do not have a Yahoo account, do not want one, do not need one,
so why would I want a Yahoo Toolbar? I promptly cancelled the
proceeding,and will do without, thankyou.

If you remove the check mark on the Yahoo toolbar it won't load it. You
can still have the Java update without the toolbar.

The following explains Java and why you need it:
http://www.java.com/en/download/faq/whatis_java.xml

You probably already have it. This latest go-'round was an update. And
as another pointed out, you needn't include any extraneous software you
don't want, such as Yahoo tools.
