Survivor checking in! I just celebrated 16 year (April 23). Don't think of
this as "your luck running out". You are lucky that this is found and can
be treated. Your next few months will be rough, but you will make it on
sheer determination. I had Chemo ,because of 14 positive lymph nodes and
radiation to top it off. If you need to "talk" please do write to me at
frame242atyahoodotcom.

The first year DD & I did the Race for the Cure together was about 8
months after my diagnosis. It was a pretty emotional experience, seeing
all those thousands of people walking together, especially the number of
pink survivor shirts and caps. It was also very encouraging to see women
that had survived for 30 or 40 years and know that their treatment
options were not as good as what we have available now.

Thanks Julia...actually my friend bought me a courage necklace and I wore it
to surgery and the nurse made me remove it. I almost cried taking it
off....OR should be sensitive about stuff like that.

I am sure all you have heard Daniel Powder's song..."Bad Day" well this was
my bad day. I learned I have breast cancer. I had my lumpectomy this week
and it came back as malignant garde 3 tumor. I will have to get a
"masectomy" and have chemo. This has been a rough day for me but I don't
think I have the strength to cry anymore. I know I will lose my hair and
this really sucks but if I have to do this to keep alive then I will have
the surgery and do chemo. I will settle for chemo hats verus hair for
life. I'll be 51 in May and this seems not fair but I get my mammos yearly
and watched and it could of been worse. Last year I had a lumpectomy in
the other breast and that was benign this year my luck ran out. I see and
hear of so many survivors and I know this group has always been here for me
when ever I needed them.

Just remembered that DSis was advised to have a really really short
haircut before starting chemo so that when she did lose her hair it
would be easier to cope with. She said it did make a difference as
very short hairs were easier to deal with than long ones.

Her hair grew back long really quickly though it did suit her when it
was really short.

Depending on the chemo your oncologist uses you will lose all or part of
your hair (some shave off the thin wispy stuff) on or about the 15th day
after your first treatment. I had a bilateral mastectomy in 10/97 and then
in 01/98 started 4 rounds of Adriamycin (sp?) and lost all my hair 15 days
after the first treatment. My scalp became itchy and tingly and then it
just fell out. I then had 8 rounds of CMF (a cocktail of 3 types of chemo)
and then 1 year of tamoxifin and 3 years of femara. My hair started growing
back about 6 months after my last adriamycin treatment. It came back very
thick and very curly at first (they call it a chemo perm) but then it
relaxed and kept a permanant wave. I am native american and have always had
chronically straight hair so this was a nice bonus. I recently grew it out
and donated 16 inches to the program that makes wigs for kids with cancer.
I wear it short now and have to have it thinned each time I have a hair cut.
Each person is different and is effected differently but don't think that
you will never have hair again. During my BC journey I received a lot of
information and support from an on line BC support group that comes from a
university in Montreal. They were wonderful and I don't think I would have
made it without them. You sign up for it sort of like the yahoo groups and
the posts come in like email to your mail box. Here is the info and link to
subscribe: Users of e-mail can also subscribe to a breast cancer electronic
mailing list. Breast cancer patients, their family and friends, and health
professionals discuss issues of concern through email messages. To subscribe
send e-mail to the listserv and write SUBSCRIBE BREAST-CANCER in the text of
the message.

Wigs are especially scratchy and uncomfortable on a scalp that is especially
sensitive from the chemo. I liked the soft stretchy knit caps very
comfortable but too warm and wore my mothers silk scarves ties with a rakish
knot until a friend gave me a soft cotton hat decorated with ribbons and
flowers. That worked very well. It was made of eyelet lace and breathed.

I have that EIC in my path report and it would always return so it's a must
to get the breast off. I will have them do the nodes, chemo port and the
breast all in one shot....no need to knock me out again. I've also heard
that about that genetic testing....so maybe the less the insurance company
knows the better. will be zonked before all this starts but I have 2 weeks
of healing before chemo after my mastectomy. I just might buy myself an
ipod and have my son download the songs on it and take that to chemo with
me.
I don't think I'll go for a wig...I'll wear some chemo caps.

EXActly!! It's your body - your decision. Avoid all those negative nay
sayers at all cost. You will need all the support and energy you can get
during the months ahead. It is a battle and there will be scars - but
victory is so sweet. I'm almost 9 years out from diagnosis and have never
regretted having both breast removed. I just don't have the anxiety that
others have about reoccurrences. I don't wear a prosthesis nor did I have
reconstruction. They call us Amazon's and that is reason for the little
stick figure in my signature.

I actually have one friend who feels I should do NOTHING and let death
happen. I am a mom, wife and friend to many. My life isn't over yet. I
think I need to avoid friends in my life like that now. I actually feed
her cats when she goes on vacation. Nobody knows what they would do until
you receive.... lose a breast or die.

You will grieve for your lost breast - it is a natural emotion and
experienced by every one who goes thru this. It's a loss and one that is
felt with the heart as well as the body. No one wants their body all
scarred and misshapened but better to be flat chested and alive, I always
say. I remind those folks that worry about appearances that I save a lot of
money that I used to spend on bras. I also wear a smaller dress size and
lost 10# over night. LOL!!
