Wow, that is terrific Michelle! For border, I'd go with a very
narrow (1/2" or 3/4") black separator band, then a wider border
pieced of red, purple, white scraps as in the blocks. Maybe just
more four patches, or nine patches. PAT in VA/USA

I made one back in March. Another list I'm on had a St Patrick's Day mystery
quilt and said scrappy was OK. Boy is it loud.
It's in my webshots album, this link should work
http://community.webshots.com/photo/...09985796OrKScm
But DD thinks it's cool and someday, I'll border and quilt it, when I decide
on a border colour or pattern. Any suggestions?

Okay, now let's open the discussion on a popular traditional
block, Jacob's Ladder Block. I have made this block in graphic
solids. The triangles and background squares are white or black,
alternating between blocks. The 'chain' squares are the colors of
m&m's candy! I need to add borders, and finish this twin size
project. It is bold and cheery. Has anyone else made a Jacob's
Ladder quilt? Need a block diagram? Here is one version:

The quilt I made out of scraps, that's ended up being DS's,
was supposed to be a Jacob's Ladder or similar. The triangles
got turned around in some places though, it turned out okay the
picture is on the website, link below. The current hand pieced
project is also based on Jacob's Ladder, a little better planned
than the first quilt :-)

I like how Melindas version uses one dark square in the Block. It gives
it a shimmery quality. There are many more possibilities with this
block than I would have guessed looking only at the pattern.

Some time ago I was in a scrappy Jacob's Ladder swap. We used any red
and Kona Snow for the blocks. I made a small quilt with four of the
blocks for a Christmas auction. You can see it he
http://photos.yahoo.com/majn1960

The rest of the blocks are in a top, awaiting quilting inspiration.
I'll try to post that one later on. It is not a traditional setting
and does not want to be quilted traditionally either.

I would love to see a picture of one done very scrappy. Making a quilt with
just two or three fabrics would take more discipline that I possess. Polly

I used that block for my starting row of the mini-row robin. I used bright
pink and deep brown. Except I used the page
http://www.quilterscache.com/V_Z/WagonTracksBlock.html

but it is the same block.

I must have been insane! The total block size was 3" finished.

Can't wait to see what others added to it.

I've never made a quilt in this pattern, Pat, though I do like it.
Hmmm.... Anyway, I did once make one block of it, just to use on my very
first quilting project, a tote bag. I made it in pinks and whites, and
that tote bag has been used to death -- literally! G It's in shreds
now, and I'm trying to get up the will to pitch it.

You're right...the same basic units go into Jewel Box and Jacob's ladder...a
Jewel box is basically two half-square triangles with two four-patch units
[usually combined in sets of four]:
+ /
/+
Jacob's Ladder is:
+ / +
/ + /
+ / +
Where the + is a four-patch and the / is a half-square triangle. Check out
quilters' cache: she has Jacob's Ladder he

And Jewel box he

There's one example of a Jewel box quilt on my site:

That same quilt with its ultimate recipient in a refuge camp in Bosnia is

Thanks for the lovely pictures Kim. My Jacob's Ladder is very similar to
your Jewel Box, so maybe I gave it the wrong name. The blocks are similar.
Mainly the color placement changes the look.

I've also just finished another Jacob's Ladder in brights and a bright
cars print on white set with sashing strips in black for one of my
nephews: I'll probably add it to my page at some point soon.

Both of the Jacob's Ladder quilts on my site are done with a variety of
fabrics, although it's a very controlled scrap look: Jacob's Ladder 1 was
made with blocks others made and sent to me; Jacob's Ladder 2 was made from
stash-- 101 fabrics in total!
http://members.shaw.ca/whiskerwerx/g...ocks/index.htm

It was great fun to do...since then a friend has also made one in the same
way: we went through my stash of fat quarters and larger scraps. I sort
those pieces of fabric by colour [roughly following a colour wheel
arrangement] into a CD stand from Ikea: we simply went from colour to
colour, pulling two shades or tones from each slot until we had 49 sets of
fabric. It makes a very striking finished quilt.

The discussion has given me the push I needed to add the photo of my latest
quilt to my gallery: Vroom! is a different scrappy take on Jacob's Ladder
destined for my 10 year old nephew:
http://members.shaw.ca/whiskerwerx/g...jacobvroom.htm

If anyone is interested, I can probably mount the pages from my powerpoint
presentation on Jacob's ladder....I run it while I demo quick-piecing this
block starting with a stack of 5" squares.
