How fun! Just see how much you have learned over time in quilting! Now you
get your fun quilt back and get a do-over

Hi Guys,
If you remember, I posted last week about the pink floral quilt I had

made
for my VDMIL and that I had gotten back now that she is in a Nursing Home.
Well, the other thing I got back was one of the very first pieced quilts I

ever
made -- a christmas gift for her. It is made of something like 43

different
cat print fabrics, has a small panel set in the center and is surrounded

by
HSTs in a pinwheel type pattern. I had tied the quilt and used poly

batting
(what did I know way back then before I got online and found you guys?)

and, to
make matters even worse, I SERGED the HST pieces together to make

blocks!!!!!
You wanna talk about thick seams? This baby has some *think* seam
intersections!!!!
I had just gotten the serger when I made this quilt and that was back

in
autumn of 1994. I must have been having fun sewing stuff with the new

serger
-- LOLOL! I also sewed all the blocks together on the serger and pieced

the
panel together with nylong thread. Instead of putting binding around the

edge,
I wrapped the backing around to the front. Nothing wrong with that but I

sewed
it down with nylon thread -- *cheap* nylon thread at that VBS!
I have now removed the yarn ties (and I hadn't put anywhere near enough

of
them on the quilt originally) and taken the quilt sandwich apart. Some of

the
nylon thread I used to sew pieces to the panel to make it the right size

had
broken so I will take all of that apart and redo it. I am just gonna

leave the
serged blocks alone cuz' THIS quilt I will keep and use for MOI! My VDMIL

used
to tease me almost every time we talked about the way I like my kitties

:-))).
I don't mind the heavy seam intersections and will just use a bit longer

stitch
length when I machine quilt the whole thing. The mismatched points will

have
to stay where they are -- adds character dontchaknow :-)).
Anyway, when I look at this poor quilt 9 years later, I wonder what I

was
thinking when I did the blocks on the serger and I laugh at myself. But I

also
remember how it made my VDMIL laugh when I talked to her that Christmas

morning
all those years ago! I think getting this quilt back as a keepsake

(knowing
that I can redo it to make it more usable for me) is better than getting
something that she had bought for herself. Every time I see this quilt, I
remember how she *loved* it and used it and cherished it and laughed and

teased
me about all those cat fabrics saying "Oh YOU -- you and your da*ned

cats".
That quilt made her smile every time SHE looked at it and THAT knowledge

means
more to me than anything material of hers I might get as a memento.
I have acquired even MORE cat fabrics in the 9 years since I made that
quilt. I wonder if I should add a few borders? I DO know that this time

I
will use a different backing (the old one was white poly-cotton and

pieced) and
I will use binding around the edges. Fixing this quilt will be at least

as
much fun as making the original. CiaoMeow ^;;^
.

their
WHISKERS!!
Nothing is complete without a few cat hairs!

I betcha we saw the same series of shows about using surgers. Mind you
I would not consider it any longer... the funnier thing is the UFO I am
working on right now is one of those surgered quilts. The quilting is
going pretty smooth thought. The bigger problem is the places where
the fabric was not quite even or in line with I ran it through the
surger and places were not sewn together... a little added stitching
though is taking care of those problems.

I am quite sure that she doesn't use this method anymore but on that show
she was
raving about that method!...It was probably more than a 'few' years ago that
I saw this!!!..

Have TWO (one King-size and one Queen-size) done with the serger in our
house----both get a LOT of use. One is about 10 yrs old and has almost
daily use. Holding up fine ; )
Did get them PRO-quilted.
