Default Needle-punched batting

What exactly is "needle-punched" batting? Why would I want it? Where
would I use it? Is it better than plain old batting?

It's a way of flattening and aerating it. The philosophy is to have it
easier for your needle to go through the batting. They've just taken a
punch stamp to it to help flatten it.

It's just a matter or personal preference- use and if you like keep
using, or don't. It's up to you.

Also s'posed to "knit" the layers together so they don't separate as
easily

Howdy!
From Hobbs Bonded Fibers:
http://www.hobbsbondedfibers.com/quilters.html
"Needle punched: This type of batting is carded or garnetted then
layer(ed) to form a web. The web is then passed through needling equipment
that mechanically entangles the web by using thousands of needles that lock
the fiber together. This type of product works to give strength to a product
while allowing for a soft hand and thinner profile vs. a high loft type
product. Needle punched wool or polyester tend to migrate, but will not
bunch or shift like plain garnetted or carded products. Needle punched
products can be thermal bonded or resin bonded."

Better?... matter of personal preference.
