I do like to feel like I've been checking things off my 'to do' list.
Actually, I've been making scads of bags and totes for the store and
not been taking pictures. I need to catch up. But here are a few
things I did get done and remember to photograph. There's a tote bag
with fabric rose embellishment, a lap/baby quilt in black and white,
and the very very beginning of OVER THE RIVER, an embroidered quilt by
Crabapple Hill.

Oh that black and white baby quilt is lovely. Red backing, too.
Gorgeous. Hope you'll post pictures of the embroidered quilt as you go
along.

Way to go Joan! All of your work is wonderful, but the black and white
lap/baby quilt is particularly stunning.

As always, Joan, you do beautiful work! I really like those roses on
the tote bag; I didn't know Clover made a tool for those!

Love your roses and baby quilt. The Crabapple Hill patterns are great.
I love the way they incorporate embroidery into their quilts.

I have stitched several Crabapple Hill samples for The Quilt Merchant,
my local quilt shop. Backstitching with only one color is the perfect
thing to do while sitting with Mom. Totally non-thinking process. I do
the embroidery and another gal makes the quilts. The instructions say
to stitch through two layers of muslin at one time. We have decided to
use a heavier fabric but only one layer. The thread doesn't shadow
through if you use a heavier fabric than the muslin. Are you using one
or two layers? We found the two layers awkward. We started with the
snowman quilt in red thread. If we had to do it again we would use
blue thread as we have seen it done that way and really like it. Next
we did the Over the River which has been our most popular kit. Under
protest I did the Halloween quilt. I don't do Halloween myself but my
friend really wanted to do it. I was just going to stitch a house or
two but somehow managed to stitch all the buildings. She did the
piecing and the final feather stitching. We just finished the fence
quilt. It is really pretty. Each quilt is so different.

I know it's mindless, but this is going to go on FOREVER! I've never
really done much embroidery. I always left that part to Mom. I guess
this is the time to put on my Big Girl Panties and embroider embroider
embroider. I should have paid more attention to what she was doing.

Our store has taught Winter Wonderland repeatedly. They advise using
a layer of warm 'n natural underneath. I'm using a wool/poly bat
myself and as seemed 'lighter.' I'm using the darkest brown floss
that DMC makes to soften up the look just a tiny bit.

I've seen Winter Wonderland in both red and blue and like both
equally. We've sold a ton of kits for Winter Wonderland, Over the
River and the Garden Fence. It makes me smile to see that embroidery
is 'coming back' into fashion. The generation after me is interested
and learning embroidery, stimulated I think by the wonderful patterns
that are now available.

I find myself wondering if my embroidery skills are up to this. I
guess I'll be better by the time I'm done, right?

Joan, how do you transfer the embroidery pattern to the fabric? Love the bag
and the black and white quilt.

Much of the embroidery on each of the first three quilts was stitched
while Mom was in the hospital for one reason or another. She is 94 and
her mind is a little fuzzy. Being at the hospital really confused her
so I had to stay with her all day just to keep her calm. It is amazing
how much stitching you can accomplish while sitting in a hospital room
14 hours a day. The panel you have chosen to start with is the hardest
of the three in Over the River because of the people. Trees and
buildings are a little more forgiving than facial features. Have fun.
You will own a treasure when it is finished.
