Featherweight Greasing

Is it a White Family Rotary? If it is, it takes the same 15x1 needles
that modern machines use. The older White VS (vibrating shuttle)
machines use the 20x1 needle, that is still in production,...

I found out something about myself.

Singers and presumably other SMs such as Nationals and New Homes and
so on produce three stitches for each revolution of the handwheel. The
speed at which the handwheel revolves depends on the size...

Free motion quilting questions

Without a presser foot, the fabric sandwich is probably not entirely
flat against the machine bed. The needle carries the thread down
through the quilt forming the loop the shuttle hook goes through....

That was a GREAT technique, and I saved it because I never trusted
HGTV not to remove it. I have the complete instructions saved as a

It shouldn't cost anywhere near that much. In January I sent a treadle

New machine - straight stitch problem

With the old all-metal machines, you could pop the top off and see
what was going on with the ZZ mechanism. There was an oscillating
track that carried the needlebar from side to side for the ZZ...

My curiosity is really piqued! What company's patterns are so
difficult that they deserve to have a $200 premium tacked on? I've

Anne, keep looking. Often the most wonderful machines will sell for
little on ebay because they're offered for local pickup only. And some
of the best SMs don't have the kind of press that makes...

Yes, yes, yes!!! Having the machine flush with the work surface will
make an enormous difference in your sewing, and for FMQ, I think it's
a virtual necessity. When I have a really big quilt to work...

Favorite machines

Taria, I don't have one that'll do it AFAIK. I have a pair of 1950s
Kenmores made in Germany by Gritzner-Kayser that use cams to make deco
stitches. One of these makes a kind of blindhem stitch, but...

The "self-oiling" machines have porous bearings that are saturated
with some kind of lubricant. It might be oil or graphite, but the
