Focus on Design: Jacob's Ladder
 

Focus on Design Feature has been on vacation this summer. Time to
bring it back!! For the newbies, Focus on Design is my
every-once-in-awhile posting to start discussion on a specific
pattern or style. Let's keep to the designated topic, please.
This is not the time to discuss chocolate (really!!) nor is it
the time to wander off into social issues or movie stars. Save
all that for another thread, thankyouverymuch!!

Okay, now let's open the discussion on a popular traditional
block, Jacob's Ladder Block. I have made this block in graphic
solids. The triangles and background squares are white or black,
alternating between blocks. The 'chain' squares are the colors of
m&m's candy! I need to add borders, and finish this twin size
project. It is bold and cheery. Has anyone else made a Jacob's
Ladder quilt? Need a block diagram? Here is one version:

I have not made this paticular block, but have been playing around with the
idea. I am in the process of collecting fabric for a quilt for our next-door
neighbor's girl. She is 9, and her and my 6 y.o. play together all the time.
She loves to watch me piece and quilt, and is always admiring the quilts I
make for family and friends, saying she wished she could have something like
that. I want to make it special, and more for her as a pre-teen that a
little girl, so am making it out of some really wild and funky colors. As
for the background triangles, not sure what to do for color. I was think
muslin, or even flannel.....

Jacob's Ladder is one of the blocks in my Bible Block Sampler. Here are some

I made a christmas wall hanging in 2003 using that
exact block. It was made with 4 Jacob's ladder

The quilt I made out of scraps, that's ended up being DS's,
was supposed to be a Jacob's Ladder or similar. The triangles
got turned around in some places though, it turned out okay the
picture is on the website, link below. The current hand pieced
project is also based on Jacob's Ladder, a little better planned
than the first quilt :-)

I haven't made one, PAT; but I did look up the picture. At first I
thought 'that's tricky', then I saw how it was built up - four patches
and half square triangles, and I marvelled that something so complex
looking could have simple roots. I began to imagine how many ways there
would be of putting these blocks together in a quilt. I'm not really a
'block' quiltmaker, but some of these blocks really are attracting me.

Haven't made one! Now I ask myself why not! Would look great in light/dark
scraps... Would be quick to assemble...

Thanks for the lovely pictures Kim. My Jacob's Ladder is very
similar to your Jewel Box, so maybe I gave it the wrong name. The
blocks are similar. Mainly the color placement changes the look.

I made one back in March. Another list I'm on had a St Patrick's Day mystery
quilt and said scrappy was OK. Boy is it loud.
