alternative to cuttlebone
 

I have used cuttlefish for casting silver items for many a year
however my supply of cuttlebones has dried up. Can anyone suggest a
good alternative to cuttlebone for casting?

The Delft Clay system of sand casting is simple to use, and although it doesn't
give the distinctive texture of cuttlebone, does the same things. Some things
it does a good deal better (better details).

by the way, I've got a box of cuttlebones around here somewhere that I've never,
and probably will never, get around to using. Contact me offlist if you're
interested.

Isn't there a tufa stone casting system too?

Have tried to purchase cuttlebone? Around here, pet stores and 'feed
stores' usually have them.

Or this system Quick-Cast MMD witch is easier to handle with small forms for
the sand clay is more firm and a little bit elastic.

That looks like an interesting system, Heinrich. Thanks for the tip. I also
like the attached crucible, which should make pouring the molds easier.
However, looking at the Schula web site, I don't see it offered. Do you happen
to know approximately how much that kit costs?

They sell it for about 99,- Euro inclusive tax. The attached crucible is a
little bit heat sensible. After about 25 to 30 melting cycles it will be out
of duty. You might buy a new one, or melt the gold or silver with an other
crucible and poor the gold through the hole of the old original crucible. That
works also very well and shares some money in a goldsmiths workshop.
