Hobby Income by
Nine Tiger
Can anyone tell me: is there any tax limit on how much you can earn with
pottery as a hobby? I will probably gross $2000 next year. With this small an
amount, I don't feel the need to do it as a business. Of course, I will declare
the income for taxes which prompted the question.
Any ideas,...

Buying a wheel by
Karen
My husband has wanted a wheel for quite awhile, and I've finally decided
to get him one for Christmas. (And hopefully he won't Google for me and
find this thread before then.) I poked around the FAQs and didn't see any
how-to-buys, so I'm going to have to beg advice.
I'm thinking a kick-wheel,...

clear glaze developes milky spots in place??? by
Zander
Hi all,
I'm having a hard time with a store bought clear glaze (cone 6). I bought
this glaze in powder form and mixed it myself. Since then I'm having
random problems with it, usually on big bowls with lots and lots of work
invested in them. Problem is: milky white translucent spots develop...

How much theory do I need to know???? by
sarah
Need some advice....
I'm relatively new to pottery (and LOVE it!!). My experience to date
has been from very substandard adult education classes, 3 hours a day,
twice a week for 2 years - not much teaching goes on as the classes
are very large and there is a huge mix of abilities. I have also...

What are the largest pots you've thrown? by
sam
My largest pot was a bowl I threw about two weeks ago. I started off
with 25lbs of clay, centered it and in the end I had a bowl with a
diameter of 20.5in and a heigth of about 11in. When the bowl was ready
leather-hard I ended up trimming 8.5lbs of clay from it, which made me
realize I probably...

single firing ash glazes by
ali
Does anyone out there single fire ash glazes? As far as getting the
slop to stay on the pot there are no problems, the problem is that as,
in my experience, ash glazes are nicest when applied nice and thick,
the glaze water soaks onto the pot wall and causes cracking. I'm
guessing that I could get...

Pictures of hand placements? by
Bubbles
Hi folks!
Me again! Avid learning taking place! Hehe!
I want to print and laminate pictures of hand positions during various
operations of throwing and then laminate them and hang them in front of my
wheel for very quick reference. I have been picture-googling for pictures,
but ended up at...

Mechanical help mixing recycled clay? by
Bubbles
Hi folks!
Up until now, I have been recycling my clay manually, but this is holding me
back when it comes to doing repetitive exercises on my wheel, as I think
about all that clay I will then have to moosh and dry and wet and dry and
knead.
We have spent quite a bit on equipment for the workshop...

over reduction disaster by
Laura
Hi All,
Can you wise potters out there give me some much needed advise about what to
do with a bunch of pieces that were over reduced?
On the good side, in my last glaze firing, the unglazed portions of
stoneware were all toasty and gorgeous. The bad thing is, areas in my old
updraft kiln that got...

cat likes to eat clay by
sandi
Sometimes I will catch one of my 6 cats (it's the same cat each time) trying
to eat my clay. Usually it's when it's leather hard. Especially when I am
trimming he will jump up on the table of the wheel and steal a ribbon of
clay as I trim it off the pot. Will it hurt him if he eats it? I take...

I would like to make a set of goblets and have not attempted it before. Do any
of you have any tips to share? I assume they have to be made in two pieces, the
cup and then the stem? Thanks all, Gaye

Tiny wood fired kiln? by
Sarah Hembree
Hi All,
Was wondering if anyone has seen a tiny wood fired kiln,
cone 10 or so. Also wondering if there is such a thing as *too small a
wood fired kiln, as in, would the, say, physics of the firing process
(air, firbox, flue, chimney, flame flow, etc...) breakdown at some
point? Or another way of...

Hi All,
I've just finished installing my kiln. I completely rewired it with new
elements etc. I replaced the old tube assembly on the kiln sitter (it's a
3tk if my memeory serves - panel mount with a backup timer)
I adjusted the hook and plate on the kiln sitter according to the manual.

Reclaiming clay - with or without lumps? by
Bubbles
Hi folks!
Full of questions tonight!
I have just started my first time trying to reclaim my used clay. I have 3
different types in 3 different buckets. Seems I got the water/clay ratio a
bit wrong in one or two, but evaporation (or adding a bit more water) should
fix that, right?
My "problem"...
