What is the value of a used kiln? by
Jon Danniken
Hello,
A friend has asked me to help her sell her kiln, and I am wondering how much
a used kiln would be expected to sell for. I realize that it depends on a
lot of factors, but I have no clue as to these things and am hoping that you
might be willing to give me a reasonable ballpark of about...

Layering Opaque Glazes by
John Rigler
I am trying to do a test where I put down a layer of black glaze or
underglaze and then put a layer of white on top of it and have it appear as
if the black weren't there at all. This is the most extreme case of a
completely opaque glaze covering something below it. I am doing all my
tests with a...

Want to make red slip by
CNB
Hi all,
I would like everyone's opinion. I fire cone 6 electric. I've been using
Standard Brooklyn Red clay and love the fired brick red color. Unfortunately
I hate to throw with it. It's just to sandy for me. I don't see another clay
with that red brick color so I think I would like to make a...

Firing Onglaze. by
Rosalind Lacey
I have more or less all the info I need about mixing and applying onglaze
but little knowledge of the firing process. Oddly enough the books I have
on 'painting techniques' fail to give details of the firing and for how long
etc. They seem to assume one would automatically know this ? Someone...

Clay Boss wheel - blown circuitboard - I need a part, but from where? by
töff
Didn't just blow the fuse, also blew the yellow disk capacitor on the
circuit board (and I hope nothing else!). The board is marked KBDM
REV.A 111894. It's Creative Industries Clay Boss, nice little wheel if
I can fix it.
Problem is, the capacitor has no legible value on it, like in farads,
so I...

pigment for porcelain
Any suggestions on a pigment to give an off-white or slightly brownish tint
to a porcelain (about 1200 degf) that uses titanium oxide for white? A
source for small quantities would be helpful too.

Beginner's Question--Potter's Wheel by
Buck
They're all over the place, of course, and have dozens of characteristics
and quirks.
I remember two things (From how long ago I will not mention!):
1. A MASSIVE foot powered wheel that seemed to hold momentum forever. No
power required except the legs. Are these antiques, (or at the very...

Single firing Done! by
DKat
Well I unloaded the kiln and was amazed how many pots came out with such few
flaws. One poor little pot was glazed and reglazed so many times that I was
never planning on firing it, just playing with techique. It got stuck in
just on principle and came out one of the better pots. The pots...

Horse Hair (Pottery) Source? by

I'm interested in trying some horse hair pottery during an upcoming raku
firing. Problem.... I don't have a horse any more and the one friend that
I know of who has a horse with PERFECT mane and tail hair for this would
KILL ME if she came to her barn one day and found clumps missing from...

looking for a specialty clay recipe by
TimR
I have a need to mix some nonhardening clay, as dense and stiff as
possible.
I've tried google searches and the library without success, and some
experiments with clay and vegetable oil, etc., haven't done well
either. (They weren't "sticky" enough, I don't know the technical
term.)
Can anyone...

is cone 06 same as cone 6 ??? by
Beowulf
As a newbie, I ordered some cone 06 and cone 10 clay. Someone told me
that there is actually cone 6 clay that is not the same as cone 06 -- is
this true and what is the difference? I hope I did not buy the wrong clay!

newbie needs help on simple question by
Beowulf
I am just a newbie in clay and throwing-- just got my own wheel after
taking some private lessons. My question: how can I rig up something at
home for kneading the clay? I mean, should I glue some canvas to an old
table, or use a staple gun to snugly attach canvas to the top of an old
table, to...

LONG post on results of "Glazus Interuptus" by
GaSeku
Grab a cup of tea or a glass of beer. This post may be LONG.
I fired the load that I had to turn off after two hours the day before. After
reading everyone's posts, I opted NOT to replace any of the cones since they
only got to 500F. I won't fail to replace them next time, just in case not
doing...

Glaze Book for Dummies? by
GaSeku
Is there something similar to a Glaze Book for Dummies? I am not able to find a
class that specifically addresses glazes and very much want to learn more about
making them. I am curious about underglazing right now but know precious little
about the how- to aspect. And Mason stains? What are they...

First firing of used kiln by
GaSeku
Ok, first question....how long should it ordinarily take an electric kiln to
fire to cone 06? I think I was close when it cut off. It was so late that I
just thought it was finished and went on to bed. This morning I realized it had
thrown the breaker! CAN YOU HEAR ME CUSSING? This kiln says it's...
