My Stupid Pot Melt Fire by Glassman
How smart can I be? I had this one of 3 of my kilns, sitting on a wooden dolly, so I could wheel it around when I needed to. The bottom has always been perfectly cool to the touch, but this kiln is 3 stacked octagon rings of firebrick. I had a little free time so I tried a stupid pot melt....

Anyone building their own kilns? by Byrd
I am trying to get started doing some glass and pottery crafting. I am having to do it on my own and with the aid of some books. I live 150 mi from the nearest school with any similar art programs and probably couldn't afford the tuition if it was next store, we're barely affording keeping the...

brass came by M. Paradis
Hi all, I had a request for brass came panel, but I have never done a panel before, and I would have the following questions: How do I cut the came? How do I bend it to contour each glass piece. I guess it is much longer to make a panel than with lead.

Dremel Versatip for Soldering Stained Glass by Philip Lewis
I was thinking of getting it for doing stained glass. The tool touts 1000+ deg (F i assume) temps, which should be plenty to solder, but i'm a bit worried that it only has a 30W heating element. I'm new to stained glass (all but cemented my first piece) and found my pencil iron is not up to the...

the best way to crush glass to make frits by joe draper
Hi Has anybody got a better method to crush glass to make frits? At the moment I am putting it between canvas and whacking it with a 21/2 pound hammer but the canvas does not last very long and I end up with bits of the cloth in the glass. Any ideas will be well appreciated. Thanks Joe

Kilns & Insurance by JK@work
Any of you that have a kiln run into any problems with getting insurance, or raised rates? Or do you just keep quiet about it? Curious.... had a little fire and wondering if I should make a claim or just shut up about it? -- JK Sinrod www.sinrodstudios.com www.MyConeyIslandMemories

Getting Closer to bailing out by glassman
I have a nearby friendly basement competitor that may buy my business & building. He needs a new place, and the timing seems perfect. A few factors are my worsening arthritis. The state of the industry. The real estate market. I'm a bit young to retire this early, but I'm looking forward...

Tempered glass alternatives? by Mark
Hi all! I had an unfortunate incident this morning: the shower glass spontaneously shattered (exploded would be a better description) into thousands of small pieces this morning. From what I read, I think this was tempered glass. Anyway, to avoid future incident, I think that it would be best to...

What to do with 2" thick plexiglass? by Wally
I've been offered a piece of clear plexiglass and can't think of what to do with it. Its clear and about 6' long, 3' wide and 2" thick. Never been used for anything that I can see. Any ideas or suggestions? It feels like it must weigh around 300 pounds. And there is quite a bit involved with...

Whaddya callit? by Moonraker
As many of you know, I do on-site repairs of leaded doors and windows. One of the more difficult things I deal with is trying to elicit descriptions from the homeowner as to what type(s) of glass is broken. One of the toughest things is getting them to identify a bevel. All they seem to be able...

Hi, I'm going to be moving onto a narrowboat in the very near future but I really want to try fusing. My other half has just been looking into all the of electrical stuff for me and has basically said my options are either a generator or a gas kiln. My questions are 1 Does such a thing as a gas...

Firing Paint Questions by Glassman
I have a few questions on firing glass paint. It's very simple black enamel lines on yellow GNA, 4 x 6 piece. What temp and for how long? I actually want the reams on the glass to go away, which will be a better match, so can I fire it higher and/or longer? Do I need to wait for the paint to...

This post is important to all by Javahut
and too long and may be off topic. Apologies extended now, my hands have been slapped, and I won't do it again. Of course, that is, in my opinion. This post is in regards to an ongoing discussion under the heading "Armstrong" and the fact that their glass is now manufactured in China. along with...

I am building a diamond beveled pattern insert for my entry door using 4" x 7" diamonds. The completed insert will measure approximately 20" X 60". I intend to place the insert between two sheets of tempered glass. How do I frame out the insert? I am sure there must be a commercially...

oxy-acetylene torch by Allan Adler
Since glassblowing is on topic here, especially if one doesn't necessarily mean scientific glassblowing, I have a question about preparing for that activity. There are no glassblowing courses I can take but there is an art course on welding that, among other things, would teach me how to...
