Are some gemstones too fragile for every day use? by
George Mauer
Hello,
I am looking for an engagement ring and I've determined that my price-
range ($1500) should be enough to allow me to get a decent mounting
with a nice bling-y semi-precious stone. Probably I would like
something large, shiny and purple or pink.
I've been talking to a lot of jewelers about...

Soldering by

I have been soldering since about 10 years old but pretty much confined to a
soldering iron.
The problems of attaching gem heads with a torch seem a bit daunting.
My current project is to be-jewel a silver chalice with my faceted and
cabbed stones. On my practice goblet, I have been using Crazy...

Ammonium chloride (alias "sal ammoniac") by
Neil Marsh
Anyone know where to find ammonium chloride, otherwise known as sal
ammoniac, in granular/powder form? (Somewhere in the
Seattle-Portland corridor would be great!) I know welding supply
places can get the stuff in one pound bars but I was hoping to find a
small tub of it in technical grade. ...

HELP - White gold ring with black marks?? by
Moochie
I bought an 18K white gold engagement ring, and noticed that the
inside of the ring had these black marks that look like black rust (or
dark grey rust). The jeweler said that this may happen if the ring is
exposed to extreme heat. So, the jeweler said she "polished" it, and
indeed most of the...

Gold Plating by

My fork tines are again beginning to show the blueing we previously
discussed so I guess my quick fix with the pickle was just a flash in
the pan.
My next attempt will be to "temper" the tines. I am thinking just
enough heat to almost get to the "straw color" and then cool. Quench
or air cool...
