Newbie Q re basting and binding by Edna Pearl
I am working on my first quilt and just found this newsgroup. Thank you for being here! I have finished machine piecing a shoo-fly quilt top and have proudly convinced myself that I was obviously born to quilt. ;-) I am about about to cut the borders (when I work up the courage), which I...

OT I'm finally retired!! by Denise in NH
I've been the director of a food pantry for 20 years and I passed the torch today. I took the new lady to the bank and put her name on the accounts, nice and official like. Yippee!!! No more weekly shopping trips, 4 full grocery carts at a time, no more monthly inventory for the government, no...

I think my quilt is trying to tell me something.... by Michelle C.
Here's the story of trying to quilt the scrappy star: First off the thing is big, 92" X 92". It was supposed to be 90" X 90". Why does this small amount make a difference? I expected it to be the smaller size, and somehow got it my head that I'd measured at that size when I hadn't. Ordered...

Un Stitching! by Pat in Virginia
Yesterday the County Quilting Gremlin hit my house. (He's been making the rounds here this month!) I sewed the wrong strips together in four sets, so had to un-stitch 8 width of fabric seams. Tedious and boring task that seemed to take longer than it should. Maybe some of you have a quicker...

Best price for needles? by Polly Esther[_5_]
We have one SM here that purrs like a full kitten when we give it a new Schmetz jeans needle. The best price we've found is 100 for $49 over at AllBrands.com. The needles are packaged in a sturdy wee box much like an old-timey match box. I was just wondering if this is the best price...

Survey time.... please add yours to the list... by Kate in MI
What 3 quilting tools can you NOT live without (excluding your machine): Be specific (not needles / pins unless they are SPECIFIC needles/pins -- you get the idea) for me, it is: 1) a 45mm rotary cutter 2) my 4" x 14" ruler 3) my 8 1/2" x 24" ruler

Speaking of Quilt Labels.... by Mickie Swall[_3_]
I am in the process of making a quilt comissioned by a co-worker for her brother for Christmas. She selected a pattern from several that I found online, and I sent for the pattern directly from the designer. I could have made it without the pattern, but bought it with a nod to copywrites, etc....

Iron Sputtering Rusty Water by [email protected]
On last Friday, my steam iron all of a sudden started sputtering and spewing out rusty water. I've had problems with previous irons and our local, extremely hard water (just white deposits -- not rust), so I've been using bottled spring water. I did not use distilled water, because the...

OT Clarification on E-Cigs by NightMist
After talking to a few folk I figured I better issue a clarification and elaboration. Yes I am in the process of switching from standard cigarettes to electronic cigarettes. Yes they do lower ones potential cancer profile. No it is not the vapor per se that is making me hack up gobs of goo. The...

The naming of quilts by Sartorresartus
With apologies to Eliot's "Old Possum" "The naming of quilts is a difficult matter, It isn't just one of your holiday games" I have finally (all bar the binding, and I want the label to be incorporated) finished the blue and white quilt I started way back when Noah was a lad. (Ecstatic Dancing...

Interesting sounding book for beginners by Leslie& The Furbabies in MO.
I just got an ad from AQS with their latest book releases. I was intrigued by this one with 'hundreds of blocks' that can be made using just squares- for the beginning... they didn't say what comes next! VBG If nothing else it would be good for those quick quilts we all seem to need once in a...
