Are you supposed to have to hold the bobbin winder against the flywheel
when winding a bobbin? Or is my bobbin winder "tire" too smooth? Do I
need a new one? I don't have a manual for the machine yet; I'm able to
figure out most of how it works, but not everything.

That really helped.

I think I do, because I still have to hold the bobbin winder against the
flywheel to get it started. Also, I looked carefully at the tire and it
looks like it may be a bit cracked in a few places. Does the tire just
slip off and the new one slip on? Wonder if I could get that locally
from a sewing machine dealer/repairer?

That seems to be okay.

Thanks! That is really good information. I ordered a replacement tire
from e-bay today -- 99 cents + 50 cents for shipping. I figured I
couldn't run to the sewing machine dealer for that :)
