Thanks for the yummy list, Amber. (I love having all the neat auctions just
laid out for me!)

Can someone explain the "raku" technique in this set? Just an overview
will be okay. Is it a frit? A mix of colors? A metal? ???

I'm pretty sure it's a frit. I'm not a lampworker, though, so I
couldn't say for sure.

I think it's Easy Money, the pairs thing. You don't have to make up a
set -- all that endless matching and balance. Just two. As long as
they're lovelies, it's a big market, in my humble opinion. (Read this
whole post before replying.......)

Earrings sell well for jewelry designers -- cheaper to buy for
customers, easiest bits to wear. I think everyone wears earrings; at
least among the women I know, even if they forego bracelets or a
necklace on a casual day, they'll still wear earrings.

I've been trying to make earrings a lot lately, and I don't want to buy
a larger set of lampwork every time I make a pair. Sometimes, yes, I
do. But I need to make a lot more earrings than I do sets of jewelry
(parures or demi-parures), and I don't have the money to run around
eBay or elsewhere buying more-than-2-bead sets when all I need are two
beads. I just don't have the dough!

Give us pairs. I know lampworkers say pairs don't always sell well --
I think there are several reasons for that. One is I don't think
lampworkers are as in love with the pairs they make as they are with
the sets they produce. That shows -- we feel it, we see it; the lack
of passion. So we share it, and we don't buy them.

I've seen lampworkers selling sets of pairs in one auction -- like
maybe three sets of pairs, or four, in one grouping. I don't know how
those sell because I've never followed the auctions to their end, and I
haven't bid on them. But I would think you'd have to be just as
careful with the pairs you grouped together as you would with any set
you sell. This is why I haven't bought any of those sets-of-pairs
auctions -- they weren't grouped beautifully. They just seemed thrown
together. I didn't find them appealing -- just haphazard.

It seems to me (on the outside of lampworking as I am) that the glass
artist just isn't as interested in pairs as they are in other beads
they make. I think if they became more interested, it would work
better.....as long as they keep the beads small enough that they don't
weigh down the earlobes too much! I made one pair with few beads
besides the lampwork twins, and the recipient said she loved them --
but they were hard to wear because of ear-stretch!

So I think if the care is there, they will sell. Like hotcakes. I
*WANT* to buy pairs, and I do -- when I find pairs worth buying. (I
can only speak for myself here.) I even would be eager to buy pairs
that went together but didn't match perfectly -- say, a pair the same
size and colors, but different surface designs. I'd LOVE that. Give
us the good stuff and you'll always make a sale.

I like sets. And I like innies (encased, frit, boro, etc) better than
outies (surface decorations). Many innies have random reactions to mixed
glasses. I guess I should call that "controlled random". And I can get a
bunch of pairs. But with surface decoration especially, I always look for
sets that have pairs.

By the way, Sooz, those Iris Buchholtz (pink) "tadpoles" look very nice as
earrings. Just one single one at the end of an earwire.

I'm still a newbie enough that I've only recently begun to make more
earrings and bracelets... but enough that I am finally beginning to
'see' beads with those designs in mind as well.

But as far as Kalera pairs I still see necklaces... more than using a
focal but lighter and more delicate than using a set. Like this one from
way back... http://snipurl.com/gzxe (sorry for the repeat, just giving
an example!)

I love that necklace *so* much that I gravitate to her pairs for
different designs in that same vein. But I recently used a pair of
Kalera's small tubes and after a few days of looking at the necklace I
dismantled it. :( The design just did not do the beads justice.
Sometimes I seem to be working against part of my nature... to keep from
making pieces that are too austere or disciplined. But its getting easier.

<snip some good stuff>

<mantra> Earrings... earrings... more earrings. :) Guess I just need a
creative shift in thinking sometimes! Thanks for the kick!
