I was wandering through Winners the other day and saw a beautiful
lightweight poncho, so I took the time to closely examine it to see how it
was put together. It's two same-size rectangles sewn together at right
angles; each rectangle had one short end sewn to the other's long end. The
resulting shape didn't have a triangular dip in front and back but was
straight across front and back with elongated folds at the elbows; more
adult-looking and elegant with the soft drapes at the elbows. It looked
like it would be very easy to do without a pattern; the long side of the
rectangle was approximately the shoulder-to-shoulder measurement of the
wearer, plus a little ease for elbow room.
The one I saw looked to be the equivalent of crochet cotton, but I was
thinking of copying it in worsted but using a very loose stitch or a small
mesh. Actually, I was just planning to use a too-large needle size to make
it lacy-looking very easily. I've made one like this in a large mesh out of
Shetland Chunky for myself, and it's very comfortable. I crocheted it
throughout in ch 3, tr 1 and it's nice and warm without being thick or
heavy.
That's my easy cheater's version, and I'm sure there are better and nicer
ways of doing it; the people on here are sure to point you in the right
direction for their favourites.
