Noreen's Knit*che

Watching episodes of JAG has brought back Don's old Navy Days, and I'd
like to make him a sweater...
They were/are called either: Watch Sweater or Foul Weather Sweater.
They were/are pullover.

Also, I have a sweater purchased years ago from Land's End, called a
Fatigue Sweater, pullover with three wooden buttons at the v-placket
neckline. They were patterned after the old WW2 fatigue sweaters. I'd
like to make one of these for Don as well.

Hugs,
Noreen

Noreen,
I have seen a free one of these on the internet. I am THINKING that if you
do a search for fatigue sweater, you may find it. Meantime, if I come across
it, I'll post here.
Good luck!

Noreen,

Do a google search using vintage fatigue or watch pullover sweater. You may
find something useful there.

I believe I have seen the Watch Hat and Sweater on the Red Cross sight. The
Red Cross passed out the patterns to loyal Americans and asked them to make
them for our Grils and Boys. I had a reprint of the sweater and hat
pattern at one time. If I find it I will post it.

The Idea of searching www.google.com was a good idea. I would bet it you
put in "red cross watch pattern" you would get it.

Let me know if you find it.

Another sweater pattern that is almost identical to the Watch Pullover is in
"Up the Back Down the Front" set of patterns sold by Leisure Arts. It has
no shoulders seams. I have made it more than once, it is a great pattern,
simple stockinette stitch just like the "Watch Pullover". It was authored
by Fred Shapiro. They call him the gourmet of knitting. I purchased it at
Wal-Mart, it was worth the price. It also has a vest, v-neck cardigan. The
vest and pullovers are round neck and v-neck, the same with the vests.

I wanted the round neck pullover like your husbund in a plain stockinette
stich. Some times the old stockinette sweater with out the embellishments
lood the bes. The up the back and donw the front method is GREAT. If you
follow his instructions you will like it also.

The v-neck cardigan instructions do not include buttons, I changed the
pattern to my on my own and added buttons when I did it. Have fun.

Could you post what you've found for the rest of us?

where on earth did you find those patterns? I looked all over Google, and
couldn't find a thing except for something really general that I couldn't
make anything usable out of...

Guess what? I HAD them all along! THe WATCH sweater was in the
Smithsonian magazine, believe it or not!
And the Fatigue was amoungst a stash of patterns from one of my deceased
aunt's whose daughter doesn't knit or crochet.
I will look for copyright info, and see if I can share or not....

Hi Carol,
It's in May, 1996, the same one that has Rosie the Riveteer on the cover
and has the salt mine (in Poland) special spread.
