In using Kreinik braid, the braid seems to b e three strands twisted. Do I
use just one or all three as blending filiment. All three seems very heavy.

It could be heavy. What size braid are you using? (Don't separate it.)

It's Kreinik Metallic Thread Blending Filament #002 (gold.)

Blending filament isn't a braid. BF is usually used as it comes off of the
spool BUT, if you want, you can carefully strip out the black (or is it
white) thread and use the mylar strip by itself. You have to be very careful
tho - mylar stretches. The stabilizing thread is supposed to be used but
I've used it without. Advantages: seems to be easier to work without it,
don't have to fuss with having the tension different on the two parts of BF.
Bear in mind that when I use BF, I do my cross-stitches first, then only do
the top stitch with the BF. YMMV

What size braid? It comes as #32, which is the thickest, size
16, size 8 and also 4, which is the thinnest. It should say on
the spool which size it is. It also comes as blending filament,
which is very thin.

Also in size 12. There is a lot of information on the Kreinik site about
using their metallics - even how the spools are designed to work.

http://www.kreinik.com/HTML/threads/kreinik_threads.html

From this site, there are links to a page on braids, on blending filaments,
etc.

It's worth visiting, and reading their guidance for using the threads.

How could I have forgotten size 12? It's what I'm using on
my current WIP. The advice to go to the Kreinik site was
right on target -- lots of infor there that's helped me
in the past.

It's okay - we all forget these things ;^) IIRC size 12 was the one which
they added to the line a couple of years ago.

If Doug Kreinik is ever doing his one day class at a LNS near you - I really
recommend it. Very interesting. They give a nice kit with about a dozen
spools of different metallics, silks, as well as small samples of purl,
jaceron - used in metalwork/goldwork. He has many stitched samples to see up
close. There was a lot of information presented about the ways in which the
different threads are made, and how they can be used. Helps to know when it
works well to pull out a carrier filament, or not. I found the class well
worth the cost.

And he is a very nice guy, too. I will never forget his undisguised
glee at making about a dozen of the most gorgeous twisted thread
friendship bracelets at a show years ago for my daughters, who were
then maybe 9 and 12 or so. He pulled yards and yards of expensive
fibers off the reels and twisted them in just a few seconds with his
little cord twister while the girls held the other ends and he seemed
to truly have fun with them! :-)))) He is the best walking ad for
that company they could have. Paula B.

I want to go on the cruise so bad, but DH and I have a difference of
opinion on it for this this year. He'll win, since we ARE on the pay
down bills plan.....and it took a huge hit this last week or so with 3
emergency room visits in 3 days and me being a walking pharmacy for
the following week...sigh

I'll make sure to post anything new she has going.

He's an entertaining and easy speaker. It's a good program, basically it's
about the products they make, interesting - he explains some different ways
to use the various threads, as well as the standard way. Of course, there's
a trunk show with the class - I bought 2 little kits when I did the class.
If you're interested in learning the details, it's worth it. They had,
passed around, samples - some of the pieces on their web-site, done with the
different threads.

Oh, boy, that 6 hr drive brings back memories. When I was living in
Gainesville, my boyfriend was in Atlanta, and my roomie was dating a friend
of mine also in Atlanta. We notoriously did the drive up for the weekends -
a lot!

Tia Mary - I'm surprised if Doug isn't coming to some shop in Atlanta, or
Macon or that area. Have you checked the Kreinik website - IIRC they now
have a link on there about Doug's tour.

The stitch event sounds like a stitchin' party and lots of fun. In this
area, the local association of retailers (knitting and stitchin') are having
a weekend stitchaway in mid-April. They took over some little hotel in
historic Hagerstown, and are having some mini-classes included in the
registration for the stitch-in. I understand the registrants get some cool
little gifties in their tote-bags. First time they've done it - I think this
is an idea that's being passed about to do in the retail/trade associations.
IIRC, Anne T. is going, as am I.

Yup, yup, yup, I am going to Hagerstown and can't wait. I did a
stitcher's getaway last year in the winter with The Brick Stitchhouse in
PA. That was a blast. The facility was great. Diane (Brick owner)
wants to do another this year, but the facility we had is very popular
and hard to reserve (lots of repeat customers that have priority
reservations on their annual weekend). A lot like the Stitcher's Lounge
at CATS with goodies thrown in. The cruise sounds like a lot of fun
also. I looked at the webpage for the shop, but the "on-line" copy of
the newsletter is from 1999. Couldn't find anything about the cruise on
the website. :-(

I know the weekend getaways are a lot of extra work for the event
sponsors, but the stitchers that attend are ever so grateful for a
chance to meet other local stitchers and a chance to stitch
uninterrupted by chores, children, spouses, phones, .....

Well, if we haven't managed to meet before then, we certainly will in
Hagerstown! I'm really looking forward to this.

My ANG chapter does a weekend stitch retreat in the spring, and tried this
fall. They go to a retreat place in rural Virginia (West and South), usually
limited to about 18 stitchers. All those who've gone have really enjoyed it.
It's been a truly nominal cost. But, it's the same weekend as Hagerstown,
and of course I promised my friend with the LNS that I'd go to Hagerstown.
Which sounds like a lot of fun - the idea of mini-classes, and then just
lots of time to stitch and relax.

I don't know that it's a terrible amount of work, but certainly does take
some arranging. For this one, every shop is sponsoring a little class, and
tossing something in the goodie bag. And the good thing - no selling during
the stitch weekend - so it's relaxed and the various shops aren't in
competition.

I'm still looking for a roomie - else, DH is tagging along - and can just
skate at the rinks up there ;^) or take up some stitching! My LNS Sitch 'n
Bitch crew is all going - but we're an odd number (more ways than one) so
I'm the leftover! But, I might be able to convince some of my barely
stitcher friends to go. Of course, I'm also drafting them to come to market
with me in Columbus in June.

I went to one of Doug's New York classes. I would agree that they are
well worth the fee. I also got several little kits (one of the
MIlkpaint ones - Because Nice Matters - which is in progress!) He's
an entertaining and educational speaker.

Why don't you contact Kreinik and ask if they can send you a schedule?
There may be somewhere within driving distance that you've never heard of
but would be willing to explore if Doug was going to be there. He was here
in Medford in October (or was it September???). Since we had just
refinanced the mortgage and got money back, DH agreed I should splurge and
take the class. It was well worth it.

At The Stitchin' Post--Nashville TN
An Evening with Doug--sounds exciting doesn't it? Doug Kreinik, you know
those metallic thread Kreiniks--he's one of them, will be here for an
exciting lecture and fun evening on Monday, February 9th, 2004. Even a kit
will be part of this fun package. Every person without fail who has
attended one of Doug's events raves about it. I figure everyone can't be
wrong! Price for the event will be only $45 if you prepay before January
l5th and price after January l5th will be $55. Limited seating as always
so prepay to insure your spot.
